Thank you for your interest in becoming a 2022 Texas 4000 Rider! We are honored to be able to accept applications this fall for our 18th annual leadership development program and cross-continental bicycle ride.
Before you begin the application, we feel it is important that you understand what it means to be a part of a Texas 4000 team. Texas 4000’s mission is to cultivate student leaders and engage communities in the fight against cancer. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a board of directors & five staff members. We work exclusively with University of Texas at Austin students to create a program that fulfills our mission and cultivates the next generation of philanthropists.
Every rider has the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, make countless friends, and embark on a journey of self-improvement & enrichment that will last a lifetime. All of this is part of what makes Texas 4000 so enticing. However, you should know that Texas 4000 involves a significant time commitment starting long before the ride begins.
Not only will you spend the summer of 2022 cycling across North America, but every rider will raise a minimum of $4,500 in the fight against cancer, volunteer 50 hours in the community, and ride 2,000 training miles. Riders are also expected to take charge of the preparation and planning for the ride (e.g. arranging lodging, organizing training rides, preparing a program teaching cancer prevention and early detection, managing the team’s finances, etc.). Finally, as a member of Texas 4000, you will be expected to maintain high standards of conduct & professionalism and to maintain positive relationships both in and out of the organization.
Your team will begin meeting in the spring to start your own journey while working to support the 2021 team and other Texas 4000 events and initiatives. Throughout the program, you will be expected to demonstrate continual commitment and teamwork to prepare for the logistical and physical demands of the ride.
Now that you understand a little more about Texas 4000, we sincerely hope you consider applying to join us in spreading hope, knowledge, and charity in the fight against cancer. If you decide that Texas 4000 isn’t right for you at this time, but would still like to help, please do not hesitate to contact us about volunteer or internship opportunities.
Yours in the fight,
Ross McGarity - Program Manager
