    How it works

The following 16 questions will give your burnout score.

Highest score (severe burnout) = 64 ; no sign of burnout = <20.

Interspersed every four questions are some brief learning snippets. By the end you will not only have a score - you'll have learned something about burnout from the experts.

And all in around 5 minutes (the geese specialise in beak sized learning  - short attention spans....just like those with burnout).

    Learning  - 1

The test can be a gentle, preliminary prompt for facing up to burnout . We know it is not generally easy to even accept one has it. This test is based on a well known validated research tool. But no test is 100% diagnostic for burnout. This one however gives a good  "indication" of the presence of burnout... or not.

And don't worry - all burnout levels are reversible (even if right now yours feels as if it isn't).

    Learning - 2

Alone the test is not "diagnostic".  There are other tests which can add further clarification if needed but they are harder to complete, more complex to interpret and not free.

We like this test as it is quick and helps to corroborate the presence of burnout (or not as the case may be). It is based on one the British Medical Association uses too.

Think of the test as a helpful first step towards a get out of burnout flight plan.

    Learning  - 3

Although the test does not mention home life - personal life IS important. However the test was validated in work settings and the World Health Organisation says burnout occurs "only at work" ( although we don't agree with the WHO!).

Burnout seems to arise in ambitious and/or dedicated people  (carers, students, voluntary workers, athletes)  - and not just high paid employees.

    Learning 4

Exhaustion, cynical disengagement & feelings of not achieving are the key features in burnout.  But each burnout sufferer has a unique and individual response to burnout.

It is therefore fair to conclude that one size will not fit all in reversing it.

The geese support burnout elimination in varied ways -  from free resources ( one of which you are using right now) through to a self paced, low demand video programme or bespoke input.

Your score suggests that either you do not have burnout  (although you may be suffering from stress as why did you do the test?) or it is very early stage burnout.

At this point in the burnout journey we find it is best approached from a career planning point of view.

    • talking to a mentor
    • getting a coach at work or outside it
    • chatting to your boss ( if approachable)
    • seeking some independent career guidance
    • learning some better workload managing skills
    • maybe seeing your GP

We hope that doing the test has been useful - if for no other reason than alerting you to some of the key features of burnout and that it is important to take some sort of action  even if the signs of burnout are "early". In fact "early" is the best point to tackle it as reversal at early stage is faster and easier.

You can return to this test in a few months time to see if things have changed. If you would like a reminder for this please tick the box for that in the next form field.
