Membership Agreement
I authorize the Los Angeles County Public Defenders Union - Local 148 (hereafter referred to as the “LAPDU”) to act as my exclusive representative for purposes of collective bargaining with respect to wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment with my Employer, Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender/County of Los Angeles. By this authorization, I also apply for membership in the LAPDU. Effective immediately, I hereby voluntarily authorize and direct my Employer to deduct from my paycheck regardless of whether I am or remain a member of the LAPDU, the amount of dues certified by LAPDU, and as they may be adjusted periodically by LAPDU. I further authorize my Employer to remit such amount monthly to the LAPDU. This voluntary authorization and assignment shall be irrevocable, regardless of whether I am or remain a member of the LAPDU, for a period of one year from the date of execution, and continuing thereafter from month to month. I understand that I can terminate my membership at any time after the initial year with thirty (30) calendar days’ notice by sending a written revocation to the President of LAPDU. This document supersedes any prior authorization or membership card I may have signed. I recognize that my authorization of dues, deductions, and the continuation of such authorization is voluntary and not a condition of my employment. I understand and agree that this authorization may be used by the LAPDU to prove that it represents a majority of the employees in an appropriate bargaining unit in LA County by a card count, and that such proof will determine whether the LAPDU will be recognized as the certified employee organization and exclusive bargaining representative.
