Dear Prospective Applicant and Parent/Guardian:
Thank you for your interest in the Lively Magnet Program. The Lively Magnet Program is an advanced academic program with limited enrollment. Our program, consisting of over five hundred magnet students from all around the Austin area, is part of almost a 136 year old tradition. Authorized by the Austin Independent School District's school board in 2001, Lively's Law and Humanities Magnet for Global Studies is one of the most unique programs in Austin. Enrollment includes over 50% identified Gifted and Talented students. We identify sixth grade students and seventh grade students for the Duke Talent Search Program. Lively's Magnet Program offers personalization for students and a variety of elective choices that correspond with the specialties of the program.
The three distinctive strands in law, humanities, and global studies form the basis for our electives in areas for which Lively is well-known. Magnet students enroll in law courses such as Introduction to Law, Criminal Law, Civil Rights Law, Environmental Law, Mock Trial, and Political Advocacy. Our humanities offerings are wide and include Introduction to Humanities, Anthropology, Harry Potter, Heroes & Monsters, Social Movements in the Arts, and Star Wars just to name a few. Global studies includes Spanish, French, and Japanese courses for high school credit and electives such as Latin American Studies, Womens Studies, and Pod Cast Project in addition to more. Magnet electives are engaging, literacy rich, and move at an accelerated pace. Concepts in English Language Arts and Social Studies are intertwined to support students in making deep connections about the world around them. Our focus on social justice and civics education is part of what makes our program meaningful and unique.
Magnet electives, while populated primarily by magnet students, are open to all Falcons. Lively students also enjoy challenging math and science classes including Medical Detectives, Forensic Science, Environmenal Science, The World Outside, Native Plants and Animals, and Rocks, Rockets, and Robots. Lively also offers many High School level courses such as Health, Spanish, French, and Japanese, as well as a variety of Project Lead the Way and CATE courses and Algebra I, Geometry and even Algebra II.
Magnet students are asked to participate in at least 10 hours of service to their communities per year. Our 8th grade students participate in our unique Capstone Project, which is a problem-based learning project where students choose their topic. These activities build a sense of civic responsibility, engage students in the Lively community, and support students in building strong resumes.
Lively offers a variety of after school clubs where students have the opportunity to make friends from all over Austin. Free late buses depart from Lively at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday so that Magnet students can participate in all after school activities. AISD provides bus transportation for any student accepted to Lively Magnet who lives within AISD boundaries.
What makes Lively special? Parents say that Lively provides a comfortable environment where students are free to explore their strengths and discover more about who they are and in what they believe.
The Application Requirements & Testing Calendar will help you organize your materials. These application materials will allow us to assess your qualifications and predict your potential success in our program. All information must be completed, signed and returned by 4:30 p.m. on Friday January 7th, 2022. We encourage all families to use the jotform on our website. Current AISD students should also apply online through the AISD Parent Cloud. Families using the AISD Parent Cloud will have student grades and STAAR scores pulled by the district. Families applying from out of AISD or who do not use the Parent Cloud to apply will need to use the paper application and provide grades and standardized testing scores. Please note that all families must show proof of residence in AISD boundaries within 45 days of the application deadline. The Magnet transfer will supercede any other existing transfers students may have.
The Lively faculty and I look forward to receiving your completed application. If you need any assistance in completing this application, please call 512-841-4916 and we will be happy to help you. On February 7th we will email you information about the status of your application to the Magnet Program.
