INTERNET PUBLIC ACCESS POLICY
Public computers are available with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Internet capabilities. Use of UCPL computers constitutes acceptance of the library’s policies and procedures.
Access to Internet Resources
The internet offers access to many valuable local, national, and international sources of information. However, it is an unregulated medium and not all sources on the internet provide accurate, complete or current information. The Union County Public Library District cannot monitor or control information accessed through the internet and is not responsible for its content, quality, accuracy, or currency. Internet users will need to evaluate for themselves the validity of information found. Some materials may be offensive to some people. Union County Public Library District’s computers are filtered in accordance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Individuals and parents must take responsibility for determining the reliability, suitability and appropriateness of Internet content not screened out by the UCPL’s CIPA filters. Union County Public Library District assumes no responsibility for any consequences, direct or indirect, arising from the use of its connections to the Internet. Library patrons use the internet at their own risk. Parents are responsible for their children’s use of the library’s resources and facilities. Parents who believe that their children cannot responsibly use the Library’s internet access are requested to monitor their children’s internet use.
Library internet computers will not be used for illegal activity, or to access materials that by local community standards would be considered obscene.
Internet Services
Adult UCPL cardholders in good standing age 18 and up may use computers and access the Internet at the public computers in the adult services section of the library. Access is granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children ages 17 and under may access the Internet at the public terminals in the children’s section or if applicable, the Young Adult section of the library. Access is granted on a first come, first served basis.
Children age 17 and under are required to have parental permission in order to access the Internet unassisted. The form is part of the UCPL library card application for minors. The library’s catalog computers are reserved for catalog access.
Non-cardholders may use UCPL public computers if computers are available. The amount of time allowed on the computer may be limited.
Users should check out a computer at the circulation desk. Appointments to reserve a terminal for a specific time may be made in advance by calling or visiting the appropriate UCPL branch. If a patron has an advance reservation for computer use, he or she takes priority over “walk-in” computer users for the reserved time. Reservations will not be held for more than 10 minutes past the requested time.
Users may reserve in advance a maximum of one hour of computer use per day. After an hour, users may obtain additional computer time if other patrons are not waiting.
Library computers may not be used to access materials that are pornographic or considered obscene by community standards.
Users are not allowed to change library computer default settings or install software on UCPL computers.
All removable storage devices (disks, flash drives, etc.) may be scanned by staff for viruses prior to use. This may be done when the user signs up for a computer.
Printing charges are 25 cents per page for black and white copies and 50 cents per page for color copies
Patrons are responsible for the cost of all printed pages on the print job they have selected. It is suggested that patrons view “print preview” prior to hitting the print button and limit the pages to be printed in order to avoid paying for unnecessary pages.
