Spay/Neuter & Vaccinations
- I UNDERSTAND that all dogs placed in foster care need to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated. If I receive an unfixed dog, The Cantu Foundation may request that I schedule an appointment with a designated TCF veterinarian and assist in transporting the dog to and from the appointment. If I cannot arrange to do the transport myself, I will call my TCF representative and assist in any way I can.
- I UNDERSTAND that no dog CAN be adopted before being spayed or neutered.
Expenses Covered by The Cantu Foundation
- I UNDERSTAND that all basic medical expenses for each foster dog that comes into my care will be covered by The Cantu Foundation, provided that an authorized TCF representative has approved the medical expenses, and the care is from a TCF-designated veterinarian.
- I UNDERSTAND that if I choose to go to a vet of my choosing, I may be responsible for the vet bill.
- I UNDERSTAND that The Cantu Foundation will provide necessary supplies for each foster that comes into my care, including, but not limited to, a collar, tag, leash, bed, crate, food, and treats. Provided items must be returned to The Cantu Foundation when the foster dog is adopted.
Dog Description & Photos On Website
- I AGREE to assist in providing adequate content that will support my foster dog's website profile. I agree to take 3+ photos and fill out a questionnaire about my foster dog's traits and behavior.
- I UNDERSTAND that I can and should promote my foster dog through other available avenues such as Instagram, Facebook, with friends, etc.
Adoption/Transfer
- I UNDERSTAND that any potential adopter MUST be screened, interviewed, and approved by an authorized TCF representative. I understand that my input will be appreciated and a part of the process, and that the final decision to place or not to place any particular dog with any particular potential adopter will be made by an authorized TCF representative.
- I AGREE to let TCF know if prospective adopters may contact me directly by phone or email, and to send copies of any email inquiries to my TCF representative. If it is possible for a prospective adopter to visit my home to meet the animal, I will arrange for a TCF representative to be there during the visit.
- I AGREE that if I find a prospective adopter for my foster dog, I will contact a TCF representative and will not give the dog over to anyone until an adoption has been approved and an agreement has been signed.
Protocol With Children
I understand that the following protocol should be followed regarding children in the house:
- Do not under any circumstances leave a child unattended with any dog.
- Do not leave bones around the house when children are present and be cautious and observant when children are eating and the dog is in the room.
- If there is a child in the household under the age of 5, the dog must be in a crate or separate room while the dog is eating or sleeping to prevent accidents.
- Children under the age of 13 will not walk the dog unless supervised by an adult.
- Whenever a child is in the house with a dog, the child is at risk of being accidentally knocked over, scratched or bitten, etc.
- Should you have ANY concerns or feel uncomfortable with a situation between the dog and a child, contact your foster liaison or a TCF representative. We will either arrange to take the dog out of your home or have a trainer come and meet with you, depending on the severity of the situation.
Cats & Dogs Coexisting
I UNDERSTAND that even if this animal has been housed with cats in a previous foster home that The Cantu Foundation cannot guarantee the behavior with a new cat(s) will be the same. Please use caution when introducing a new dog to existing cats in the household and do the introduction slowly over a period of a few weeks, keeping the dog on leash. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact a TCF representative.
Multiple Dog Households
I UNDERSTAND that the following protocol should be followed when bringing additional dogs into the house:
- Do not leave multiple dogs at home in the same room unattended.
- Do not feed the dogs in the same room and don’t leave toys and treats laying around the house.
- The Cantu Foundation can put you in touch with either a senior volunteer or a behaviorist to assist you with a dog-to-dog introduction if necessary.
Incident & Medical Care Responsibility
If an incident occurs where a Cantu Foundation foster dog is responsible for injuring a resident dog, and you request the Foundation to cover the medical costs, the Cantu Foundation will assume responsibility for making all medical decisions for your dog. This is because treatment would fall under our account and must be coordinated through our veterinary partners.
If proper safety steps (such as separation during feeding, no unattended time together, etc.) are not followed, the Cantu Foundation will not be responsible for any resulting medical expenses for your resident dog.
General Agreements

- I AGREE to immediately notify my Cantu Foundation contact, send "URGENT" email to foster@thecantufoundation.com and Fatima (text and call 617-309-9375) in the event a foster dog goes missing or is injured.
- I UNDERSTAND that if I decide to adopt a foster dog in my care, I must go through the adoption process, including paying the adoption fee.
- I UNDERSTAND that if I need to return a foster dog to The Cantu Foundation’s care for any reason, enough forewarning is necessary for TCF to locate a new foster home placement for the dog, and that this process may take a week or more, depending on the dog and the number of other dogs in foster care.
- I UNDERSTAND TCF retains the right to remove a foster dog from my care at any time.
Release of Liability; Assumption of Risk; Hold Harmless
- The Foster understands and acknowledges that fostering animals involves inherent risks, including but not limited to bites, scratches, illness, zoonotic disease, property damage, escape of an animal, and injury to persons or other animals. The Foster voluntarily assumes all such risks associated with participating in The Cantu Foundation’s foster program.
- In consideration of participating in the foster program, the Foster agrees, to the fullest extent permitted by California law, to release, waive, hold harmless, defend, and indemnify The Cantu Foundation, its directors, volunteers, and authorized representatives from any and all claims, demands, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or relating to the Foster’s participation in the foster program or the care, custody, transportation, or handling of a foster animal, except to the extent such claims arise from the gross negligence, reckless conduct, or willful misconduct of The Cantu Foundation.

This document provides for the release of liability of THE CANTU FOUNDATION, Inc. (TCF) and its volunteers on account of the actions of any dog of any breed, which has been released into the ownership of TCF and placed into the care of a Foster Care Provider (“any fostered dog”).
