GUIDELINES
1. Use of a fire pit must take place in an approved location for fire pit use (e.g. fire pit at the Stout Meeting House).other locations will be approved on a case by case basis. All Fire Pits must be designed for this purpose. No Makeshift Fire Pits are allowed. All Fire Pits, portable or other, must meet local fire regulations.
Fire must be at least 25’ from a structure
Fire must not be located under utility lines
Fire must not be located on combustible decks/porches
Fire must be attended at all times
Method of extinguishment must be available while burning
No burning while windy
Only burn clean wood and brush
Fire size shall not exceed 24” x 24”
2. The host of the fire pit event must be present for the entire time that the bonfire is burning and have with them some method of being able to communicate with the Department of Public Safety and/or 911 in the event of an emergency.
3. All host information must be included on this form prior to the date of the actual event.
4. The host must call and notify the Department of Public Safety and inform them that the bonfire is starting and confirm the end time of the event.
5. A fire extinguisher must be kept at the site of the bonfire the entire time that the fire is burning.
6. The host or their designee will need to pick up a fire extinguisher and dousing bucket at the Department of Public Safety to take with them to have at these events. Once the event has completed the host or their designee will need to return the fire extinguisher and dousing bucket to the Department of Public Safety.
7. The host of the fire pit event is responsible for making certain that anyone who is invited to the bonfire refrains from:
Possessing and/or consuming alcoholic beverages.
Possessing and/or consuming illegal substances (e.g. marijuana, other illicit drugs).
Violating any Federal, State, and or local laws and ordinances.
Violating any College policies, rules, or regulations.
Leaving any trash or debris at the fire pit location. (Host is responsible for clean up)
9. At the conclusion of the actual event the host must pour copious amounts of water onto the fire to completely extinguish the fire. This is to include all, or any, hot coals that may still be burning. The fire extinguisher should not be used to extinguish the fire unless in the event of an emergency and in such cases the Department of Public Safety must be informed immediately of the incident.
10. Once the fire has been extinguished the host must contact the Department of Public Safety to advise that the fire has been extinguished and that the event has completed for the evening. The Department of Public Safety will then inspect the fire to determine that it has been properly extinguished.
