Loft Policy
Lofts must be freestanding, constructed with bolts, and not attached to a wall, floor, or ceiling. The student’s loft must be removed immediately if it damages walls, ceilings, or floors. There must be 28” of space between the top of the mattress and the ceiling. Homemade lofts are prohibited.
Students may rent a loft from the University if they want one for their room. Loft rental is $129 per year and will be added to the Student’s University bill.
Air Conditioner (AC) Policy
Students who are approved for an AC unit in their room must meet the following requirements with their unit:
- Request for an AC unit must be submitted and approved by the Department of Residence Life.
- The student will purchase a portable AC if approved. Window air conditioners are prohibited.
- The unit must meet the following criteria:
- Dehumidification capacity with bucketless self-evaporation.
- Power supply must include 110-120v with less than 10amps/1200watts.
- Includes a window kit with hose connectors, adapter slide bar, and exhaust hose.
- Max 5000 British Thermal Units (BTU)
A fee of $150 will be assessed at the time of installation of the AC unit to cover the costs of added electricity, installation, and removal by Briar Cliff’s Facilities Department.
- In late August, the Facilities Department will install any approved requests with units meeting the above criteria.
- In early November, the Facilities Department will uninstall AC units for the cooler months of the academic year. This will occur unless a student’s particular AC accommodation requires the unit to be left installed for a different duration of time.
- In the Spring, AC units will not be installed unless otherwise requested due to the traditionally cooler months.
- During the Summer, the Facilities Department will uninstall any remaining AC units following move-out unless the student remains in the room for the summer.
- AC unit approvals are only valid for the requested year; students must request their approved AC units each academic year by contacting Residence Life and filling out the appropriate form.
Due to building and safety codes, certain buildings have limitations regarding whether AC units can be reasonably installed in a room. Electrical issues may also require the unit to be removed.
