YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE FOSTER CAREGIVER
Environment
-Provide a safe, peaceful environment for your foster cat(s) in an appropriate space for the socializing plan (e.g. Extremely shy cats should be kept to one room until they are interacting with confidence);
-The cat(s) should be separated in a spare room away from all other animals, as well as small children in the household for the first 3-7 days or until comfortable. Slow introductions are required for each cat and this in turn will create a more balanced transition period.
-Keep the cat(s) indoors at all times with windows closed and window screens secured so the cat may not climb or scratch through and potentially escape; Windows may be opened only to a maximum of 1 inch, with supervision at all times.
-Provide a scooped litter box, fresh water and food on a daily basis. (MTAF will provide food and litter if the foster is unable to do so. However, please do not purchase and send us a receipt for any supplies without our authorization. We are a small rescue and funds are limited, we can typically get food/litter donations if requested)
Vetting
-Transport the cat(s) to a veterinarian, when necessary (MTAF will provide transportation if the foster is unable to do so);
-Administer any medications prescribed by a veterinarian or inform MTAF if unable to do so;
Health
-Provide MTAF with regular updates about the cat’s progress and observe closely for any possible health or behavior issues. Immediately inform MTAF in case of any of the following:
-Lack of appetite (adult cats should eat the equivalent of 1/3 - 1/2 cup of dry food and half of a 5.5oz can of wet food per day, kittens can eat as much as they would like);
-Change in appetite or water intake;
-Lethargy, or change in energy level;
-Agitation or aggressive behavior
-Inappropriate elimination or marking;
-Frequent visiting, posturing or straining/meowing in the litterbox with little produced.
Updates
-Inform MTAF when the cat(s) seems ready for adoption, sharing information about the cat via Facebook messenger or email.
-Provide MTAF with electronic photos and/or videos of the cat(s) or allow an MTAF volunteer into your home to take such photos so that he/she may be publicized for adoption;
-Allow MTAF representatives to meet with potential adopters through a virtual platform like Facebook or Zoom (so the adopters can see the cat(s) when acclimated and comfortable); In-person visits will only be allowed if all parties are in agreeance.
Policies
-Provide MTAF with at least one week’s notice if you are unable to continue fostering the cat(s);
-Foster cat(s) is MTAF’s responsibility and may not be abandoned, given, or sold to any other person or organization;
-MTAF will be responsible for naming the foster cat(s), unless otherwise indicated by MTAF. Due to the volume of cats brought in, MTAF must adhere to a naming system and a filing system is in place at the vet. Please commit to calling the foster cat(s) by their given name and do not create a new name.
-MTAF may visit the home or remove the cat(s) from the foster home at any time.
-You may foster for other organizations, however you must not foster an MTAF feline at the same time due to possible illness. MTAF will assume you are available and contact you when a feline is in need of a foster home. Therefore, you must immediately inform MTAF if you take in a foster animal from another organization and you must advise when the animal(s) are no longer in your care.
