South Asians are the fastest growing ethnic group in Canada, with most of us in Ontario living in the Peel Region. Research has shown that people of South Asian descent are at higher risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. Our research shows that in South Asian households, women can strongly influence diet and exercise, which, if managed properly, can lower the risk of these illnesses. However, one challenge that us South Asian women experience in improving the health of their families is lack of social support. We want to see how you as a South Asian woman can promote healthy active living in our families and community with the support of your social networks. If we can better understand our South Asian women’s social networks, we will be able to design interventions that help us improve the health of our families with the support of your social networks.
This survey is being conducted as part of a research project from McMaster University's START WATCH study (REB# 10896).
In this survey, you will be asked to answer questions about your social media usage, and provide some demographic information. The goal of the activity is to understand how women use social media to share information for healthy active living in our South Asian community within the Peel Region, Ontario, Canada.
When data collection is finished, we will remove all identifying information (e.g. names) before sharing the data externally. If you are not comfortable having your responses shared, please do not participate in this survey.
