    • Have some paracetamol (Calpol- Infant) ready at home (only to give, if needed).
    • Even if your child is under 2 months old.
    • Do not use any numbing cream! 
    • Very important to read the section on pain relief!  It contains more information.

    • We estimate your total stay in the clinic will be less than 90 minutes.
    • This includes the process for consent, procedure & post-op review.

    Consenting

    • On your arrival, you will be provided with a consent form to complete and an aftercare leaflet to read.

    • Our staff will go through the consent form and answer any questions you may have.

    • During the consent process, we will weigh your child.

    • If your child is under 2 months old.  You will need to know his weigh, so you may know how much paracetamol (calpol to give, if needed).

    • Before the procedure, you will meet our staff performing the procedure and can answer any questions you may have.

    • In some cases, after examining your child the operator may decide that he is unable to perform the procedure.  We will explain to you the reasons why.

    Complications

    • Most complications are readily treatable and cause no long-term effects.

    • The rate of procedure-related complications from circumcision in the neonate is approximately 2 to 6 per 1,000.

    • The most common complication of male circumcision is bleeding.

    • Infection: 1 out of 1,615 circumcision (0.06%)

    • Urinary tract infection: 1 out of 5,007 circumcision (0.02%)

    Procedure

    • Parents are not allowed to stay in the operating room during the procedure. This is the standard practice for the majority of hospitals and clinics, even for more minor procedures. This is for a variety of reasons.

    • Do not use vaseline.
    • You do not need to buy Vaseline.
    • Vaseline will not be needed.
    • Vaseline does not make the ring come off any faster.
    • If you are using creams or ointments given by your GP.  You can continue using them.

    Cleaning

    • If your child has a big poo and it goes onto the circumcision.  Use some wet cotton wool and give it a gentle clean. You might not be able to fully remove all the poo, that is ok. This will get cleaned on day 2 and onwards.

    • When cleaning the rest of the body, you can use wipes as normal.

    Daily text messages

    • Every morning (for 14 days), a message will be sent with circumcision advice.

    • These messages will be referring to online photo examples.

    • It is highly recommended to view these photos is before your appointment (see your appointment text for the link).

    • If you do not receive the daily message by 11 am (this is very rare), reply back with a message and we will resolve this matter the same day.

    Nappy changing

    • Change your nappy as normal.

    • Continue using the same size nappy as normal.
    • Leaving the nappy off or on for longer will not affect the circumcision.

    • If your child is above 6 months old, while the ring is still attached, we recommend wearing 2 nappies all the time (to reduce your child trying to touch the ring).

      Soak the ring in plain luke warm water for 10 minutes.

      Do not add anything to the water, no salt, bubble bath, dettol etc..

      Instead of soaking the ring, you can give your child a bath instead.

    • Soak the ring in the water EVERY morning & evening.
    • When the ring falls off, you can stop soaking the ring in the water.

    • Instead of soaking the ring in the water.  You can give your child a bath instead.

    • There are no restrictions on how to bathe your child.  Bath your child how you would normally bathe him.  You can give a bath any day now of your choice.

    • You can use shampoo, bubble bath and body wash as normal when bathing.

    Pain relief

    • In the clinic, we will weigh your child and provide you with an aftercare leaflet.  The leaflet will show how much paracetamol you can give to your child.  Please make a note of how much you can give.
    • If your child is under 2 months old, you can still give paracetamol.
    • When the clinic finish is closed, we can not access his notes to provide you with his weight.  So please make a note of his weight in the clinic.

    Pain relief (if your child is under 2 months old)

    • If your child is under 2 months old, do not buy paracetamol from the pharmacy or pharmicst, they will give not give it to you.
    • Go to any other place, e.g. Petrol station/Tesco/Asda and get it straight off the shelf.  
    • Calpol and paracetamol are the same.
    • You can buy 'Calpol Infant', '2 Months plus', '3 months plus'.

    Pain relief

    • Paracetamol for babies from birth to adults is calculated using their weight.
    • We use recommend scales, which area more accurate scales than typical home scales, base on this we can calculate the correct dose for your child.
    • Do not use any numbing (anaesthetic) cream!

    • 2 hours after the procedure, give your child 1 dose of paracetamol.
    • After the 1st dose of paracetamol, most children will not require further pain relief.
    • After 6 hours from the last dose of paracetamol, you may give further paracetamol as instructed on the aftercare leaflet (provided in the clinic).

    You can park in Machester - The Forte.  This is about 10 sec drive from the surgery on the main road.

    Which circumcison method do we used for circumcison?

    • We used the Palstibell method for circumcison.
    • This consist of a plastic ring that is placed under the foreskin.
    • It is fastened with a string.  The excess foreskin in removed.
    • Over time the ring with fall off, leaving he head of the penis exposed.
    • The plastibell is known for being relatively simple and quick compared to other circumcison technques.
