    Hybrid systems make use of a bi-modal inverter that can switch between off-grid and grid tie mode. They work best for those who want to be connected to the grid and have backup power available during outages, or for those who want a grid-tie system that can use the solar energy without selling it all to the grid. Hybrid systems always include a battery bank and a battery-based inverter, and they usually have a solar array and a dedicated electrical sub-panel for your critical loads (ex. fridge, lights, heating system).

      2 WAYS TO CALCULATE YOUR DAILY ENERGY LOAD IN WATT-HOURS:

      1) If you are currently on the grid, divide the monthly kWh use from an old electric bill by 30 days to get daily usage. [Be sure to use a bill from a high-usage season so the system will be sized to account for this demand.]

    • Critical loads are the appliances and circuits you want powered by the system during an outage. This usually includes some lights, some outlets, and key appliances like the fridge or water pump.

      2 WAYS TO ESTIMATE YOUR CRITICAL ENERGY LOAD IN WATT-HOURS:

      1) Use our Load Calculator to help create an accurate list of all usage. Check out our list of Power Ratings for Common Appliances

      2) You can use a Kill-a-watt meter to find out exactly how much energy your individual loads are using, or a home monitor to measure the whole house or bigger electrical loads.

    • If you plan to run AC appliances (which are those in a normal home), you will need an inverter. To properly size an inverter (in Watts) we need to identify all of the loads you may have running at one time. A larger inverter than necessary costs a bit more, but allows you to add more loads later. An inverter which is too small will not allow you to run everything at the same time. You can use our Load Calculator to calculate your max power at one time.

      Flooded lead acid (FLA)

      Tends to be the cheapest, requires periodic maintenance, and typically (but not always) has a longer life span than sealed AGM batteries. Discharge is best kept to 50%. Best practice to fully charge once per day. Approx. 1000-3500+ cycles, depending on the model.

      Sealed Gel/AGM

      More expensive than FLAs but cheaper than lithium. Maintenance free. With some models they won't last as long as FLAs, but with other models they can last as long or even longer. Discharge best kept to 50%. Some models do well in a partial state of charge and can remain stable in standby. Approx. 500-3000 cycles, depending on the model.

      Lithium (LiFePo)

      The most expensive technology but also by far the longest lasting. Maintenance free. Lighter in weight than either FLA or AGM. Lithiums also have the best warranties. Some models are Blue Tooth enabled for easy data display, and can function in extremely cold temperatures. Can discharge to 80% or even 100% and still have a longer life than FLA or AGM batteries. Fine with partial state of charge.Approx 5000-10,000 cycles, depending on the model.
