    IEL Designation Review

Integrative and experiential learning opportunities offer different ways for students to develop and put into practice key skills that will enable them to succeed in their professional careers; to hone the skills and foster values essential to civic engagement; or to contribute to thinking about and seeking solutions for some of the world's complex problems. Both integrative and experiential learning opportunities allow students to engage in learning that extends beyond the classroom. Students complete one Integrative and Experiential Learning requirement.

    A) Make connections through synthesis or application, and reflection across academic boundaries in at least two areas of knowledge or modes of inquiry, including the following:

    • Understand relationships among various ways of knowing, and recognize the strengths and limitations of different approaches for comprehending phenomena.
    • Use diverse perspectives and their vocabularies to intentionally recognize and solve problems, address existing questions, and ask new questions.
    • Adapt and apply various perspectives developed in other contexts to new situations, while realizing the strengths and limitations of these different approaches.

    AND/OR

    B) Make connections through synthesis or application, and reflection across program(s) of study and experiences outside of the typical classroom experience, including the following:

    • Apply academic knowledge and skills to address problems, questions, or challenges in professional or community contexts.
    • Evaluate the relationships between theory and application, recognizing both connections and limitations.
    • Reflect critically on how experience(s) outside of the typical classroom experience contribute to learning and personal development.
