  • ATTENDANCE AND MAKE UP POLICIES

    • Consistent, punctual attendance is expected for the entire semester, though it is understood absences may be necessary due to illness, family emergency, or other unforseen reason.
    • Please inform the teacher of any absences by emailing info@pianostorytellers.com  or texting 646-373-4374 prior to the class.
    • Unlimited make up classes are available. To schedule a make up, email the teacher with your make up class preference and await confirmation. New material or topics are presented almost every week, so it is always best for students to attend their regularly scheduled class to ensure their learning is seamless and scaffolded. Please understand students who attend make up classes may not receive the same amount of attention and individual feedback as they would if they attended their regularly scheduled class. This is to ensure the integrity and quality of the small-group setting.
    • Should a class be cancelled due to the teacher's absence, a make up class will be offered at a time determined by the teacher, which may or may not take place during the regular class day/time.
  • TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS, POLICIES, AND EXPECTATIONS

    • TWO DEVICES such as an iPad, tablet, smartphone, laptop, etc, are required to attend class. You can also use a webcam connected to a laptop as the second device. Preferably, one of the devices will have a larger screen, e.g. tablet or laptop. Instructions on where to situate the devices will be sent before the semester begins.
    • A high-speed cable or Fios internet connection is necessary for your child's progress and effectiveness of the class. A  minimum internet speed  of 25mbps download / 5mbps upload is required. Test the speed of one of your devices from where the piano/keyboard is located to make sure you meet the requirement. It takes less than one minute. (You only need to test one device, as the required internet speed can be shared between both devices.)
    • To avoid screen freezes or poor connection, others in the household should not stream video content (e.g. YouTube, Netflix) or download/upload large files during class.
    • Zoom must be installed on both devices, and it must be updated promptly when new versions are released to ensure it will work properly.
    • Devices should be fully charged before class.
    • Students are not allowed to chat or touch their devices once class has begun, unless asked to do so by the teacher.
    • Students will be "spotlighted" at times during class. This means the student will be enlarged on everyone's screens. This allows: 1) interactivity between students and the teacher, 2) the teacher to give direct, one-on-one feedback and support to the student.
    • To respect the privacy of all students, filming or recording the class is not allowed.
  • OTHER GENERAL POLICIES

    • COMMUNICATIONS: Communications from the teacher will be sent primarily via email -  info@pianostorytellers.com ; likewise, email is the best way to be in touch with the teacher. Please make sure to read all emails thoroughly.
    • LOGGING ON: Students should log in to Zoom a few minutes prior to their class starting and have their devices in place.
    • PARENTS/CAREGIVERS OBSERVING OR ASSISTING DURING CLASS: It is not required for a parent/caregiver to attend class with their child. However, parents/caregivers are more than welcome to sit in on their child's class. A parent's direct assistance to their child during class may promote better learning outcomes, however, if it seems to negatively impact a child's progress, the teacher will discuss with the parent privately and may advise for the child to attend the class solo.
    • STUDENT AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS' BEHAVIOR:
      • Students should come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn.
      • Students and parents/caregivers/other household members, must display a high level of respect in all interactions with the teacher, other students, and any other participants at all times.
      • Should a student's behavior be disruptive to others, a warning will be given and discussed privately with the parent/caregiver.
      • The teacher reserves the right to disable a student's video and audio without warning for the remainder of a class should a behavior, visual, or sound captured on-screen be deemed inappropriate for other participants to see or hear, e.g. foul or harmful language, full or partial nudity, physical discipline, etc. This includes visuals or sounds from other members in the student's household or in the student's home environment. Should this be the case, the student can continue to participate in the class by following along, but will not be able to interact with the teacher or other students. The teacher will then discuss privately with the student's parent/caregiver.
      • Further incidences of disruptive or harmful behavior could lead to dismissal from the program without the possibility of a refund.
    • PIANO/KEYBOARD REQUIREMENT: It is strongly recommended for students to have either a piano in good playing condition or a digital piano with fully weighted keys, which typically only come in full-size, 88-notes (keys). At a minimum, however, students are required to have a 61-note keyboard to play on at home by the second class .
      • Need to purchase a keyboard? Registered students can receive a 10% discount toward the purchase of a digital piano/keyboard at Guitar Center - email info@pianostorytellers.com  to discuss and for recommendations.
    • PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS: To get the most out of the program, help your child develop a love of piano from the start, and build your child's confidence in playing, practice is essential.  For ages 5-6, a minimum of 2-3 times a week, 5-10 minutes is expected , and for ages 6-8, a minimum of 2-4 times a week, 5-15 minutes.
    • OTHER:
      • To minimize disruptions, students should use the restroom prior to the start of class.
      • Students must keep their fingernails short.
      • A parent/caregiver must be at home with the student during class.
  • TUITION REFUND POLICY

    • Withdrawals requested through February 26, 2021 will be refunded except for the $35 deposit.
    • Withdrawals requested on February 27, 2021 and after will not be refunded.
