  • Eligibility Criteria

    Short-Term Fellowships are open to all scholars and researchers, irrespective of career stage or educational credentials, who plan to work closely with the Science History Institute’s collections on an independent research project. Applicants may be citizens of any country.

    Eligibility for Distinguished Fellowships extends to tenured professors and academics at the rank of senior lecturer or above, established scholars in independent research libraries or museums, and independent scholars with a commensurate record of scholarly achievement. Applicants may be citizens of any country.


  • Work Authorization

  • If you do not already hold a U.S. visa, you will need one in order to receive your stipend.

    Visas take approximately four months to secure, possibly longer. Please plan accordingly.

  • American Trust for the British Library (ATBL) Research Fellowship

    This US$2,500 short-term research stipend supports research projects that make use of collections on site in any department in the British Library. (Link opens in a new tab.)

    Please specify two individuals who have already agreed to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Your referees should be unaffiliated with the Science History Institute. Immediately upon submission of your application, emails will be sent to those individuals with instructions on uploading their letters to our system.
