Academic Pre-Requisites/Requirements
Courses need to be complete or in progress.
- fingerprinting and background check
- 30 hours of undergraduate coursework from an accredited college or
university prior to semester of application to program
- All pre-requisite and degree/licensure courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or better, “C-” is below the requirement
- Pre-requisite courses requiring a grade of “C” or better:
- ED 200
- ED 220
- PSYC 204 (elementary licensure only)
- ED 230 (elementary licensure only)
- ENG 101
- ENG 102
- General education math
- currently enrolled at Adams State University
- cumulative and semester GPA of 2.75 or better
These GPAs must be maintained throughout the program through
graduation.
Program Pre-Requisites/Requirements
- Professional Behavior Orientation
- Signature affirming agreement and understanding of Professional Conduct Agreement for Field Experience Lab Students
Application Process
- The application process is broken down into two phases. All phases must be completed during the semester in which you submit your application.
- All conditions must be met in order for a student to be
- fully admitted to the educator preparation program and
- eligible for upper level education courses.
Phase 1: Application
Complete admission application (forms available on the School of Education Website):
- Admission application form
- Belief/philosophy statement
- Recommendations
- Work with Children: Recommendation form
- Academic Performance: Recommendation form
Phase II: Admission Interview
Once Phase II is complete, the student will sign up in the Undergraduate Teacher Education Office for an admission interview.
All coursework must be completed before the student teaching semester, maintaining an overall GPA of 2.75.
Content Compentency
Colorado state law mandates that all licensure candidates must demonstrate their content competency within the area of their license. The Adams State University School of Education employs rigorous assessment measures before students embark on their student teaching journey to ensure that program completers are eligible for licensure and well-prepared for full-time teaching roles.
For Elementary Candidates: There are two options available for demonstrating content competency:
Option 1: Attain passing scores on the following standardized examinations:
PRAXIS 5205 (159)
PRAXIS 5901 series (as specified below)
Mathematics 5903 (157) or 5003 (same exam, different number)
Social Studies 5904 (155) or 5004 (same exam, different number)
Science 5905 (159) or 5005 (same exam, different number)
Option 2: Create and submit a Multiple Measures of Content Competency Portfolio to the Colorado
Department of Education (CDE).
For Secondary and K-12 Candidates: There are two options available for demonstrating content mastery:
Option 1: Obtain passing scores on state-approved Praxis exams for the designated content/licensure area.
Option 2: Provide evidence of having completed 24 credit hours in the content area as part of a degree program, with grades of B or higher in all relevant courses.
