• DTH Opinion Spring 2021 Application

  • The opinion desk is now accepting applications for the spring semester.

Due to the unusual schedule of this semester, we will have two application deadlines. Please fill out the following form completely and submit by either 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 8 OR Jan. 29.

The deadline you choose WILL NOT affect your chances of being selected, but it may affect when you can start working.

Questions? Contact opinion editor Paige Masten at opinion@dailytarheel.com.

  • The opinion desk is hiring for three positions: Editorial Board members, columnists and cartoonists.

Below is a brief description of each position.

Editorial Board: Members of the Editorial Board author editorials on behalf of the board and may contribute the occasional column. The board meets twice each week to discuss the latest news and decide how to address it.

Columnist: Columnists publish an article every other week, usually on the same day (e.g., every other Wednesday). Their work is typically centered around the same "beat," or topic. Columnist positions are limited.

Cartoonist: Editorial cartoonists publish their work on a weekly basis. Editorial cartoons illustrate a point of view on current social or political topics, commonly using irony or satire.

  • Work Sample

Work samples are required to assess an applicant's skill level prior to joining the staff.

Applicants for Editorial Board or columnist positions should submit writing samples. This can be previously published work from a previous news organization, a piece of creative writing, an article written for a journalism class, etc.

Applicants for cartoonist positions can provide work samples either by linking to an online portfolio (Instagram or other social media accounts are acceptable) or by submitting three work samples. If submitting individual work samples, please combine them into one document.
