    LCC Leaders self review
    • As our club grows, LCC wants to ensure that paddling with our club is as safe as it can be. We are therefore using this self review, whose aim is to provide a framework, so that you are more aware of your current skill set and how to improve as a paddler and leader. It should help you consider your own levels of experience, expertise and training. It is also a framework for the club to maintain a list of club-recommended leaders.
    • LCC feels that improved leadership is the way to make paddling with our club as safe as it can be, by reducing the number of incidents and by improving the chances of a successful outcome should they occur. This is also in line with recent BC guidance on unaffiliated members insurance.
    • Therefore we have adopted a policy of having all club trips lead by either a BC qualified or club approved leader and maintain the list of club recognised leaders.
    • Members are therefore invited to undertake this self review to become a club approved leader. If you already have BC leader qualifications you will not need to complete this process unless you wish to do so as part of an ongoing development. Please note that most aspects are based on BC course content.
By going through this framework you can become an approved leader and lead trips for which you have suitable expertise.
    • To support this process, LCC also intends to offer some training opportunities, which will reflect the aspects identified by this self review process
As a calendar event co-ordinator you may be the trip leader, but if you are not an LCC recognised leader you will have to ensure that a recommended leader has RSVP to your trip and they are prepared to lead.
    • In the longer term, the most desirable situation would be where all trip participants are suitably experienced as trip leaders at the appropriate level. The leader can then ensure good group decisions are made at appropriate times, but with group members take responsibility for their own and group safety.
    • Only complete the section(s) - river, open canoe, sea, which are relevant to the type of trip you wish to lead.
    • You can also gain recommendations from qualified and experienced paddlers to support your own thoughts. After you submit your self evaluation, a meeting will be arranged to discuss the next steps. You can identify your training needs. Then depending on your personal preference these could be met through a BC course, LCC or other club sessions, or arranging your own input.
