ABOUT BROADWAY & BEYOND
DYCD’s Broadway and Beyond initiative seeks to address education equity as we empower youth voices through learning and then retelling history through various mediums of art including performance and visual arts.
- DYCD Broadway Track: Partnering with the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s EduHam program (inspired by Broadway smash-hit musical, HAMILTON) to give NYC youth tools, access, and the platform to re-examine and retell history. NYC Youth will reimagine and rewrite history incorporating storytelling foundations to build out quality performance pieces in song, theatre, spoken word, and rap. Through a social justice (equity and equality) lens, we raise youth voices, awareness, and call for action in different mediums of art. For grades 6 to 12.
- DYCD Heroes Project Track: Focused on re-writing historical figures as heroes in the form of comics and telling a story of what their true heroism was/the unsung heroes of history. Youth will explore topics of social justice and inequality creating graphic illustrations that reflect their voice and ideas. Participants will learn how to develop a storyline and learn from professionals in the field. Young people will have a hardcopy and virtual comic book created and released. Participants will share out their completed work at the culminating event to promote social awareness and youth voice. For grades 4 to 12.
