  • K9 Handler

A search and rescue (SAR) K9 handler works alongside specially trained dogs to locate missing persons in a variety of scenarios, including natural disasters, wilderness searches, and urban emergencies. Handlers are responsible for training, conditioning, and maintaining a strong bond with their canine partners to ensure effective communication and teamwork. They interpret the dog’s behavior during searches, enabling them to locate victims by scent, whether it’s through tracking, trailing, or air scenting. In addition to working with their K9s, handlers often collaborate with law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency response teams, and they must maintain their own physical fitness, training, and certifications to perform effectively in challenging and high-stress environments. Their work is critical in saving lives and bringing closure to families in distress.
  • K9 Flanker

Flankers are paired with a K9 team on all searches. The flankers primary responsibility is the safety of the handler and K9. Flankers will help the handler watch for obstacles and conditions that are unsafe, Like drop offs or traffic if working along a road. It's also the flankers responsibility to handle all radio/cell phone communication with Incident Command or other teams. Flankers also run all the navigation and tracking software during a search.
