Thank you for your interest in the Fort Wayne Dance Collective's 2021 Choreographer's Lab!
The Choreographer's Lab is program where artists of all abilities will be presented with tools to help them create meaningful dance works. Through this lab, choreographers will have the opportunity to create a piece that they will showcase during a live performance* at the end of the program.
The Choreographer's Lab is open to both emerging and experienced choreographers alike. The lab provides the freedom for experienced choreographers to try something new or to take their talents to the next level. For those just starting out in choreography, the lab provides guidance from experienced choreographers including key concepts in dance and improvisation.
This year, the Choreographer's Lab will feature pieces with a focus on the city of Fort Wayne. Applicants are encouraged to create pieces that highlight our city's history, growth (past or present), resilience, and/or thriving arts community. Pieces that can touch any of these topics, or are created in collaboration with a local artist, may get higher priority in acceptance into the lab. Adding another choreographer, a musician, a visual artist, spoken word, and other mediums will elevate your work to a new level!
Lab sessions are held at FWDC on Saturdays from 12pm to 1:30pm on February 20, March 13, March 27, and April 10. Choreographers are strongly encouraged to attend all lab sessions and to work outside of lab hours to both set choreography and clean their pieces. Lab hours provide minimal rehearsal time, but will allow choreographers to share their works in progress and get feedback from other lab participants. Key concepts and tools for creation will be given during these lab hours. Choreographers may ask for as much guidance as they would like during this time.
Dancers may be provided for choreographers if requested.
Performances of the pieces created in the lab are currently scheduled for May 1st at 2:30pm & 7:30pm, as well as May 2nd at 2:30pm. Important rehearsal times also include the evening of April 28-30.
Please help us to create an exciting showcase of new works by filling out this application! This application is due by February 1, 2021.
*Please note that the details of the lab and performances could change due to COVID-19.
