Program Description:
Young, diverse, and female lawyers, especially those working for large firms, often struggle to get courtroom standup time. These lawyers need allies—e.g., supportive clients, committed law firm management, and mindful judges--to address this well-documented issue. For example, many judges now have rules encouraging parties to assign oral argument duties to younger lawyers. Our roundtable will reflect on the success of these allies’ initiatives and discuss why it is important for our bar (and good for clients) for not only new lawyers, but also diverse and female practitioners, to have these opportunities. The panel will include Chief Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas; Judge Stacey G. White of the United States Patent Office Patent Trial and Appeal Board; Chaka Patterson of Adtalem Global Education; and Bonnie Lau of Morrison Foerster.
