Who is SYD?
First, thank you for being here! I'm Syd. I am a queer multidisciplinary artist living in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal, Quebec). Always fascinated by the body, movement and healing; my drawing practice in connection to my dance practice led to me to handpoke. For me, handpoke is to honour our ability of being empathetic creatures. The body is amazing and resilient, marking it with art is a reminder of how lucky we are to exist in these shapes that hold so much memory and feeling. What is hand poke?
A stick and poke or a hand poke is a machine-free tattoo. The technique involves using a needle to manually enter the ink into your skin. This method of tattooing is thought to be more painful but most actually tend to find it more bearable than machine tattooing.
They are permant. The longevity of the ink depends on a few variables: the pressure of the artists poking, the skin and area of the body, and the style each artist chooses to have.
FLASH
I work in a variety of styles. Flash drawings can be found posted on my Instagram @syd_sydd_syddd. I can also show you my sketchbook of unfinished works that can be turned into tattoos on the spot. I do repeat flash, I can make small adjustments to any of my flash if you would like it to be more unique to you.
CUSTOM
I will do custom work, all you have to do is send me reference photos or a desription of the idea, where you would like it and your budget. I work best when you have an idea of what you want and give me the creative freedom to develop options in my style of drawing for you to choose from. I will do up to 2 revisions of the drawing. I am also open to improvational/collaborative ideas on the day of the session if you are feeling a bit more spontanious. The only thing that I do not do is copy existing artwork that is not mine. I am happy to interpret from existing works and translate them into a new and unique tattoo in my style. I am open to ideas and love to try new things so let your imagination run wild and I will try my best to bring your tattoo dreams to life that honours your idea and my drawing style!
My style is quite naive, playful, and gentle. I ask you kindly to recognize my working style and if you are looking for something outside of what I feel I can do I will recommend you to another artist or ask you to continue your search so you find the right fit. There are so many artists out there and I am sure you will find one that wants to do just what you are looking for!
IMPORTANT
All skin tones, textures, and shapes are radically welcome, and I can present any flash for you on darker backgrounds. If you would like to disclose any information about your body, I will not share or use that to exclude you (unless it is a medical/technical restriction). Touch-ups are almost always free, with the exception of hands, feet, and fingers.
I do not know everything, and thus feedback is crucial especially in regards to inclusivity. Consent and communication are priorities, and my goal is to make beautiful art that is an extension of your already beautiful body! The root of my practice is to honour the journey our bodies move through. My mark making's soul purpose is to make you feel even more empowered as your bad ass self!
PRICE
My minimum rate for a tattoo is $150 CAD (or 120 euros). The price for a piece depends on the designs details and overall size.
1)For flash, all you have to do is let me know which one you would like when filling out the form and I will write back to you to let you know how much it is. I still ask you to provide me with your budget and if there are small details you would like to add to the flash they will be added to the overall cost.
2)For custom pieces I ask you to tell me your budget. The cost of custom pieces will depend on size, the design, and how many revisions I do (max 3).
When budgeting please consider your privilege/class, race, gender identity, and your ability to make/budget/save money when planning your budget. I will never ask you to prove or otherwise justify what budget you have. Be honest with yourself and me, we can most definitely work something out.
After confirming a time slot, in the case that you do not go through with the tattoo and we have to make a last minute cancelation I ask for a $50 charge to cover the time put aside for our time together and for the prep that goes into the drawing of the tattoo. So I ask you to please think about it before making the commitment. I ask for at least 72 hours for cancelation or rescheduling.
PAYMENT
I accept cash or etransfer, cash is preferred. Payment can be made at the end of the session.
LOCATION
I am practicing out of my home. I ask that you respect my privacy and my personal boundaries. Once your appointment is confirmed I will give you the address. Unfortunately it is not accessible to all as my apartment is on the fourth floor with access only by stairs.
