    Presented to a Self-Advocate in BC February 26th, 2021. For taking awesome advocacy action in 2020! Submission deadline: February 8th, 2021.
  • BC People First is proud to present the Self-Advocate Leadership of the Year Award. In celebration of an individual who has shown exceptional leadership and knowledge throughout the 2020 year in the field of advocating for the rights of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. 

    This award showcases the importance of self-advocacy and encourages all Self-Advocates to continue to lead and to be inspired. A winner will be selected following the decision process. The winner will be announced at BC People First’s virtual conference event for self-advocates on February 26th, 2021. The winner will receive a $200 honorarium award (to assist in their advocacy efforts or learning this year) and an award plaque. 

    Nominee Eligibility:

    Nominees are people in BC with intellectual or developmental disabilities who have completed exceptional self-advocacy and disability rights related work throughout the past year.

    Nomination Guidelines:

    • To nominate someone for the award please fill out this form as the Nominator. The person you are nominating is a Nominee for the award.
    • The Nominator must ensure that the nomination information below is completed in full. 
    • The nomination will be judged based on the answers provided on this form.
    • People can be nominated for the award by a peer, family member, staff, colleague, support worker, or friend. Nominators can nominate more than one person if they desire.
    • Completed nominations must be submitted by 5pm, Monday, February 8th, 2021 to be considered.

  • Answer questions 1-5 to the best of your knowledge about the person you are nominating for this award. 

    Examples of achievement may include but are not limited to:

    • Inspiring mentorship and guidance for people new to self-advocacy
    • Innovative development of new or unique approaches or programs within the field of self-advocacy
    • Board work, committee/task force involvement in the field of self-advocacy
    • Teaching, writing, or presentations to raise awareness or advocate for policy change
    • Participation in public advocacy campaigns or projects with local organizations
    • Applying learnings from attended workshops or courses to their own lives and the lives of other self-advocates
