Wearing schedule for your ankle foot orthosis/knee ankle foot orthosis:
The first time you wear the orthosis it should be no longer than 45 minutes. When you remove the orthosis, examine the leg, ankle and foot. Should there be any markings found, this is normal, as they should present for no more than 5 minutes. The orthosis may then be placed back on. If any area of the leg shows signs of skin abrasion, then immediately remove the orthosis.
From the second day forward, you may wear the orthosis every 2-3 hours. Examine the leg, ankle and foot for any skin abrasions and again if any red areas are discovered they should disappear within 5
On day four you should increase your wearing time according to your comfort. There should be an increase in the wearing time and tolerance each day. Each time you remove the orthosis always examine the leg, ankle and foot for any skin abrasions.
If swelling is present while you are wearing the orthosis, you will discover red lines around the outlines of the orthosis, this is normal and usually does not require an adjustment.
Your Orthotist should have informed you of the importance of heel height of your shoes. Difference in heel height due to change in foot wear may cause some discomfort and should decrease with time.
