We appreciate your interest in supporting Washington Project for the Arts (WPA)! We look forward to reviewing your submission for our upcoming benefit auction, which will be hosted online on Artsy in May 2021. The auction’s theme this year—Am I Altering Your Aura?—comes from the work of poet and activist Audre Lorde. In determining which artworks to submit, artists should consider the following quote:
Am I altering your aura, your ideas, your dreams,
or am I merely moving you to temporary and reactive action?
—Audre Lorde, “Poetry is Not a Luxury” (1977)
Please read the following selection requirements carefully. Not completing your application correctly may create processing delays or result in the disqualification of your application.
All professional artists making work that is experimental and/or pushes at the boundaries of traditional practice are eligible to submit.
All forms of painting, drawing, photography, collage, printmaking (analog and digital), sculpture, and three-dimensional multiples are eligible. *No jewelry, crafts, video or sound art will be accepted at this time.*
Artists must have exhibited in an artist-run or alternative space, commercial or university gallery, or museum in the three years prior to February 2021.
Artists may submit between one (1) and five (5) artworks.
We prefer to include multiple artworks by each artist, when possible, to provide choice and context for buyers.
Artwork submitted must have been completed in the last three years. Graduate work is acceptable; undergraduate work is not.
Submitted artworks cannot have been shown in previous WPA events/auctions.
All artworks, if accepted, must be installation-ready and in good condition at the time of the auction (May 2021). 2-D artworks on paper must be framed
and ready to hang with d-rings and wire.
All artists will be asked to agree with the framing requirements upon completion of the submission form.
SUBMISSION FORM REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES
All artwork information entered in our online submission form is needed for listing accepted works on the Artsy auction website and for potential use in the auction’s digital or printed promotional materials. Please make sure all submitted information is accurate and formatted according to our specifications.
High-Resolution Artwork Images: As this is a virtual-only exhibit and auction, the quality of the artwork images is especially important. If your work is accepted, you will have the opportunity to submit additional detail images.
All image files must be JPG or PNG
Sized to approximately 5 x 7 inches (1500 x 2100 pixels) at 300 dpi
Minimum 2000 pixels on the long side
Maximum file size 30MB
File must be saved as last name, first initial_title.
For example: DoeJ_Untitled3.jpg
Submitting photographic artwork: If submitting photographic artwork, please briefly state in the medium description the type of process and medium used in developing and printing
Submitting an editioned artwork: If the work is an editioned multiple, please indicate the print/edition number and edition size in the appropriate submission field. Print reproductions of paintings will not be accepted.
Dimensions: Unframed dimensions are required for each work. All dimensions should be converted to inches using that following format Height x Width x Depth (to the quarter inch). For example: 8 x 11 3/4 x 3 in.
Retail Value: In past years we have noticed that work with a retail value under $2,500 is the most successful in sales. Submissions with a retail value over $10,000 will not be reviewed.
Reserve Price: The reserve price is the lowest price you are comfortable with your work being sold—not the amount that you will receive if the work sells (sales are split 50-50 between you and WPA). It is also the price where bidding begins. We find that if the reserve price is between 30 – 50% of your retail price they are the most successful in sales.
Sales Split: WPA will retain 50% of the final sale price, the artist retains the other 50%. Artists can choose to donate a larger percentage of their final sale price to WPA.
Gallery Courtesy: If you are an artist with gallery representation, it is your responsibility to notify your gallery about Auction participation. If you would like us to give your gallery representative a courtesy in the Artsy listing, please include it in this submission.
