According to B.C. law, HFLA can only offer loans to people over the age of 19. As such, if a student is not yet 19, the parent/guardian will need to make the application.
HFLA is piloting a new program called ACCESS which is specifically designed to assist students from low to moderate income homes. This loan program will have relaxed loan application/guarantor requirements with the goal of providing young Jewish students greater access to a post-secondary education.
In order to qualify, your combined family income must fall within these ranges:
If you are financially independent from your parents, the income threshold to be considered for this program is $32,000
Note: HFLA will be awarding two loans as part of the ACCESS pilot program in 2021. Applicants studying in British Columbia will be given priority consideration for this pilot program.
If you do not wish to be considered for the ACCESS program, you will need to provide guarantors to be considered for an HFLA loan.
*NET income is the amount you earn after tax and deductions. It is the amount that you receive in your bank account or on your pay cheque.
A guarantor is someone who agrees to be responsible for the debt of a borrower should they default on their loan payments.
Guarantors must reside in British Columbia and be at least 19 years old. Guarantors cannot be married to you or to your other guarantor.
A second guarantor is required for loans over $5,000. If you are requesting more than $5,000, please list a second guarantor here:
Please ensure that you have spoken with your guarantors to request that they serve as your guarantor BEFORE you submit their names. We will call them upon receipt of your application to ensure that they qualify and are willing to serve in this capacity.
In leu of submitting a guarantor, please submit the name of a character reference we can contact from the organized Jewish community. This can be a teacher or administrator from a Jewish day or suplementary school, your Rabbi, a youth group leader, a case worker from Jewish Family Services or Tikvah Housing or anyone else from a Jewish organization that can speak to your character.
Please make sure to reach out to this person after submitting this application so that they expect our call.
