Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster home with Summit Dog Rescue. Please read the foster information below and then answer the following questions to the best of your ability.
-
You must be at least 26 years old to foster for SDR.
-
Ideally you must be within 20 minutes of Boulder in order to foster so that our behavior team can support you and your foster dog.
-
SDR will pay for needed medical attention (at our veterinarian in Lafayette) and food (if you can pick up in Boulder area). Your foster will come with a Freedom Harness, a tag, and a supply of heartworm prevention pills. We can also supply a crate if needed (but please return it after).
-
We require that you will do some basic positive reinforcement/force-free training to help make the pet more adoptable; this may include house training (but if you don’t want to work on housetraining, please let us know and we CAN find a dog that has those skills - but it could take longer).
-
You will need to learn about dog body language, force-free training basics and dog behavior. We will provide you with the resources to learn this information, as well as teach you via monthly Facebook live trainings and shadowing our behavior team on occassion.
-
We require that you shadow one of our behavior volunteers as they work with a current foster dog BEFORE you are given your own foster dog.
-
Most of the animals will be coming from shelters. We ask that you be patient with them and try to help them transition to their new roles as “adoptable dog" in any way needed.
