Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster home with Summit Dog Rescue. Please read the foster information below and then answer the following questions to the best of your ability.
- You must be at least 26 years old to foster for SDR.
- Ideally you must be within 20 minutes of Boulder in order to foster so we can physically support you and your foster dog, and so you can engage in shadowing and learning from our certified professional trainer. Understanding behavior and working carefully with our fosters is a key part of our mission.
- SDR will pay for needed medical attention (at our veterinarian in Lafayette) and food (if you can pick up in Boulder area). Your foster will come with a harness, a tag, and a supply of heartworm prevention pills. We can also supply a crate if needed (but please return it after). We ask that you provide bowls, and a bed or blankets.
- We require that you will learn and employ positive reinforcement/force-free training with the help of our trainers.
- You will need to learn about dog body language, force-free training basics and dog behavior. We will provide you with the resources to learn this information and work with you one on one.
- Most of the animals will be coming from shelters. We ask that you be patient with them and try to help them transition to their new roles as “adoptable dog" in any way needed.
- We ask that you commit to your foster dog until it is adopted. This is minimum 1-3 months. We are not a high volume rescue, and we strive to have extremely low return rate (which we have been successful at achieving).
-
Keep in mind that these dogs are rescues, and may have varying levels of fears and maladaptive behaviors that they may need help working through - versus the easy/friendly dogs you may see on social media or walking around town.
-
Please take your responsibility as a foster seriously and use your time to help them overcome these issues so they can be successful in their forever homes.
