Please combine the following documents into one PDF file and attach below. Please name your file Last Name, First Name - 2022 Staff Application (e.g. Smith, Jane - 2022 Staff Application). If you do not name your file as requested, your application may not be considered.
1. Cover Letter (3 pages max.)
Please ensure your Cover Letter includes the following information:
- How will you contribute to the educational mission of NMUN and promote an inclusive environment?
- How have you grown in your previous MUN experiences, and how do you hope to grow this year? Please identify specific skills and competencies which you would like to learn or improve.
- Describe your ideal working environment, including how you prefer to give and receive feedback, how you manage your needs in high-stress situations, and what kind of support you need to succeed in your role.
- Deadlines and Communication: Although a volunteer program, NMUN•NY has many deadlines that staff members are expected to meet. Staff members are also expected to respond to conference-related communications within 24-48 hours, with any exceptions cleared with your Under-Secretary-General. What is your plan for meeting NMUN•NY deadlines once given and what will you do if you cannot meet a deadline? What challenges do you foresee with respect to communication and how would you address them?
If you are a returning staff member, please address the following (in addition to the prompts above):
- If you were previously unable to fulfill your NMUN obligations for any reason, how will you prevent or manage these challenges in 2022?
- If applying for Director (Committee or Information Services), how will you identify and meet the mentoring needs of your team? Reflecting on mentors and leaders in your own life, describe what you appreciate most as a mentee and how this relates to your own mentorship style.
2. Résumé / CV (2 pages max.)
Your current résumé (no more than two pages). List all prior National Model United Nations experience you have (general MUN conferences are not required). Please detail countries represented and committees simulated as a delegate, as well as any experiences as chair, rapporteur, or conference staff.
3. Hypothetical Questions (1 page max.)
Starting on a new page, address how you would handle the following hypothetical situation(s) in no more than 100 words per scenario. Provide responses to all situations if you are applying for both substantive and administrative positions.
If applying for a Committee position:
- You're on the Dais with your dais partner, your chair and your rapporteur. It's Tuesday morning, and the work is piling up: working papers are coming in, notes reach the Dais, your dais partner is complaining about their rapporteur and during a suspension you notice that your Chair is walking around giving feedback to delegates' working papers. What do you do?
- While in suspension, you are walking among the delegates in the halls of the Hilton. While you are there, a Faculty advisor sees your Staff badge and immediately approaches you. They begin with a litany of concerns about CCPCJ a committee that you do not sit on. They are concerned that their delegation has not been on the speaker's list for three hours. How would you respond?
- During chairing you take 2 motions to set the agenda, 1 motion to suspend the meeting for 20 minutes, and another to suspend the meeting for 10 minutes, and one delegate raises a point of order. In what order do you entertain these motions and why?
If applying for a Conference Management position:
- You have several tasks that you have been asked to assist with; you need to upload draft resolutions to the Hub, a committee needs assistance editing a working paper, and there are several delegates waiting for help in Information Services. How would you address this situation and organize your response to these tasks?
- You find yourself in regular disagreement with a member of your logistics team during the conference. You think they give delegates incorrect information and take too long to complete tasks, or they are not including you in making decisions. How would you address this situation?
- You are approached by a delegate who says they never received their placard from their faculty advisor. When you inform the delegate that there is a $10 fee for a new placard, he becomes very upset. Please describe how you would address this situation.
4. Writing Sample (3 pages max.)
Please submit a writing sample, with footnoted or in-text citations, of no more than three pages with your application (this can be an excerpt from a larger piece of work). The writing sample should not have gone through significant editing or revisions from external editors. At the beginning of the writing sample, please indicate for what purpose and when (month/year) it was written. Please do not submit a background guide written for any MUN conference.
