Dr. Dominique Lawson, PsyD, was born in Decatur, IL, and grew up in Normal, IL. She graduated from University Of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Psychology, and received her hard-earned doctorate in Psychology from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL. Throughout her education in Normal, IL, Dominique strived to excel in her studies including advanced placement classes at Normal Community West High School. She also has been a natural advisor to her friends and family, being a trusted ally to her peers throughout her life. Always the bubbly and compassionate spirit in her circle of friends, her degree in psychology is a perfect fit for personality traits. She is a much needed addition to the field of psychology in that a quality increase in diversity and inclusion is a benefit to the communities in which Dominique will serve, and the African-American community in particular. This scholarship was established in 2020 by her mother Rhonda (Singleton) Johnson in honor of her achievements.
Purpose: To provide financial support to students of color, the encourage students to pursue the field of psychology, and to bring awareness of the importance of addressing mental health.
Reward: One individual selected from the pool of qualified applicants will be awarded a one time scholarship for financial assistance during the 2024-25 academic year for $500.00. This is a non-renewal scholarship.
Qualifications: Interested candidates must meet the following criteria to qualify for this award:
- Must be an African-American high school senior residing in Bloomington IL, Normal IL or Decatur IL and graduating during the 2024-2025 school year.
- Must plan to attend an accredited two or four-year university or college or an accredited trade school as a full-time freshman in the fall of 2025. (Provide copy of acceptance letter.)
- Must provide an official high school transcript.
- Must submit a completed electronic application by 11:59pm on May 3rd 2025. This includes an essay question which should be a narrative between 500-700 words that explains how an increase of diversity concerning African-American Psychologists will be beneficial to the African-American community.
