Biography Instructions:
Enter a 100-word biography written in the third person summarizing your educational and professional experiences to date (summarize in the narrative form your résumé submitted with your application materials). Please remember the biographies will be used for introductions and teaming purposes for AFI film productions and may also be used in AFI publications, scholarship purposes, etc. Biographies are a part of AFI's directory information.
Bios may be edited for clarity and to fit AFI style guide.
Below are the guidelines to create a bio that adheres to AFI Style:
- Start the bio with your full name. If you use a nickname or prefer a shortened version of your name, put that name in quotes.
- Example: Robert “Bob” Smith or Cecilia “CC” Jones.
- When referencing yourself in the third person, either use your preferred pronouns or your last name.
Example: Smith’s first short film ELEMENTS premiered at Slamdance in 2019, and he is in post-production on his second film.
Example: Jones graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine art design from New York University. They worked as a production designer on the horror short film titled BEHIND THE MIRROR which has been featured on Vimeo’s Short of the Week.)

Sample biography:
Jennifer “Jen” Chan is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz, with a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology and Film & Digital Media. She also studied in Prague and Amsterdam and spent two summers at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, studying film and television production. Last summer, she served as an additional assistant to the producer on an upcoming Hollywood film shot in Montreal. Chan’s short film, OUTSIDE VOICES AND THE MAGIC RING, won First Prize at the 2019 UC Santa Cruz Film and Video Festival.
