About the show
ArtsRevive is pleased to open registration for its 20th annual juried art competition. The show has grown significantly over the past several years in size, popularity and most importantly in the quality of the submissions. Alabama Artists: Roots and Wings is a reflection of that growth. Entry for 2022 is open to artists who are from Alabama although they may now live and work elsewhere (Wings) as well as those artists who currently live in Alabama (Roots).
The ArtsRevive show has built a reputation for its varied sampling of Alabama talent at its finest. The show will be held at ArtsRevive Cultural Arts Center located at 3 Church Street in the heart of historic downtown Selma.

Here’s my history in a nutshell!
I am currently the Executive Director of the Shelby County Arts Council (since 2013). I’ve always been a working artist in some way shape or form.
That said, in1979, I was a Fine Arts major at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. That lasted about three and a half years! I got married. My wife got pregnant. I ran out of money. I went to work as a freelance artist and a musician working as many side jobs as I could tolerate.
Here’s an overview:
1979-1988: Freelance Artist working by commission and working singer-songwriter. My freelance experience during this time included numerous illustration jobs including three published children’s books.
1989-1994: Regional marketing Executive for Benson Music Group I managed to distribution and promotion of Gospel music under this label in four states.
1994-2012: Freelance Artist specializing in large-scale murals in dozens of commercial and residential spaces.
Working musician/songwriter, twice a finalist in the International Blues challenge in Memphis TN. Inducted into the Alabama blues Hall of Fame.
During this time frame (2005) I also begin to teach for the Shelby County Arts Council. In 2007, I was asked to design a program to bring art/music therapy into the Juvenile Detention Center, in doing so, I learned how to write grants to pay for the programs. It’s fair to say, that from 2007 to 2013, I gradually changed from a working artist to a designated art administrator. That’s where I am now…
