    2020-2021 Youth Advocacy Scholarship
  • Denise Foster Mixon was a true youth advocate and educator. A graduate of Delaware State University and Widener University she valued education and worked hard at affecting the lives of young people. This scholarship is offered to honor her and assist students seeking higher education.

  • Scholarship Criteria

    • Be a male or female, graduating high school senior and attend a school located in Delaware County.
    • Have a grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
    • Be accepted at an accredited two or four-year college/institute of higher learning. Applications received without college acceptance letters will still be considered for the scholarship.
    • Show evidence of involvement in extra-curricular school activities, community and/or church.
    • Submit a completed application:
      • The completed application must be completed by March 19, 2021 .
      • Applications received after March 19, 2021 will not be considered.
      • Submit a typed essay of not less than 500 words that answers the essay question .
      • Submit an official High School transcript that clearly reflects your GPA.

    NOTE: Submitted materials will not be returned.

  • Essay Tips

    • Use an appropriate style and vocabulary. Make sure you are within the bounds of acceptable usage.
    • Write a first draft then spend time polishing your essay.
    • Make verbs strong and active.
    • Make descriptions precise and powerful.
    • Use proper grammar and syntax.
    • Remember, your topic must have an introduction and strong conclusion.
    • Indent the first line of every paragraph.
    • Check your spelling. Use spell check or a dictionary if necessary.
    • Check your punctuation.
    • Check your grammar. Do all sentences have a noun and a verb? Is the tense correct?
    • Check your capitalization. Are all proper nouns capitalized?
    • Proof-read your essay to make sure you have answered the question.
    • Let someone else such as your English teacher, counselor or parent/guardian read it.
