The Norton College of Medicine is committed to transforming student learning and social responsibility, deepening faculty engagement, and partnering with the community to address identified priority areas. Utilizing our most valuable resources and areas of expertise, we seek to provide training and technical assistance to student leaders and faculty members who aim to facilitate CEL experiences and community partnerships.
All new CEL activities, projects or initiatives must first be approved by the Director of CEL Program prior to student participation in an effort to ensure a successful, sustainable and meaningful learning experience.
Students and faculty wishing to expand or modify a project at an existing site or start a new project at an existing or new site are required to submit a project proposal. Only one (1) proposal per project is necessary.
At a minimum, the proposal must include:
- a general description of the activity/project/activity, including rationale for the activity/project/initiative, identification of the organization/location address at which the project will take place and the intended target population. Please also provide the name and contact information for the site coordinator who will be overseeing the project at the partner site and the faculty/staff member providing oversight and monitoring at Upstate.
- a brief summary of persons involved in the decision-making process for this activity/project/initiative and the preparations that have taken place to date to start the activity/project/initiative. For example, a needs assessment was conducted to determine a gap in services.
- identification of at least two (2) learning objectives outlining what students can learn from participating in this experience and how these learning objectives will be assessed. For example, at the end of this experience, students will be able to expand their knowledge of migrant communities and their barriers to accessing healthcare. This learning objective will be assessed through group reflections or pre-post tests.
- a detailed timeline of how the project will be carried out, activities/services that will be offered, the frequency with which they will be offered, and length of each session or meeting, etc. Please add anticipated start/end dates.
- the number of students required and a description of their responsibilities (if applicable). For Service Learning Leaders you must specify the responsibilities of each student leader on the service project. For example, one student will be responsible for recruiting/coordinating student volunteers. The description of roles may be used to determine how many service-learning leaders will be needed for the project.
- (if applicable), a detailed budget describing specifically how much funding you will need to carry out the project and what exactly the funds will be used to purchase.
- a plan for sustaining the project long-term as needed.
Upon receipt of your proposal, you will be contacted by the Center to make arrangements for the appropriate next steps in the development and implementation process. Depending on the nature of the proposed CEL, additional approvals may be required.
