To our friends and family,
Thanks to your overwhelming interest and support, and the passionate stewardship of César Vega, the 2020 vintage is ready to bottle and ship. To say we knew what we were getting into when we decided to increase production 10x is not just an understatement, it's a farce!
But, the challenges of 2020 were met with gusto, good and bad humor, and most importantly the same community-focused experimental winemaking that Barbichette is all about. We borrowed tanks, and totes, and trucks, and funnels, and forklifts. We commandeered cottages, clippers, and coffee roasteries. We rallied friends, farmers, and experts. We stressed, and argued, worked hard, and made up. But more importantly, WE made the wines. And now they are ready to share with you.
As promised, you will be able to make your selections from each of the three wines. While there is enough Barbichette (Dry Riesling) to go around and around again, the new wines; 'Chette Baker (skin contact Gewurztraminer) and Claro Que Si (Semi-dry sparkling) remain limited. We kindly ask that you limit your selection to one bottle each of 'Chette Baker and Claro Que Si per each 3 bottle share. (For Example, a 3 bottle share gets you up to one of each new wine, 6 bottle share up to 2 of each new wine etc...)
We remain committed to strengthening our relationships with the vinegrowers and the greater Finger Lakes community. Along the way, we've made new friends who have opened their doors to us and shared their experience and wisdom with generosity and kindness. With that in mind, the 2020 vintage will begin our mission to give back to the Finger Lakes region by helping to protect the area's water quality for future generations. We will be donating 10% of all proceeds to the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
With your support, we look forward to raising a glass in the near future, and many many more in years to come!
César, Nick, and Caleb
Now, without further ado, choose your adventure for the 2020 vintage:
Barbichette
dry riesling
This is where we started, in some ways, and this is where we continue. Finger Lakes riesling is the siren song that beckons us to do what has been done but to approach it with fresh eyes and a novel perspective. The outcome, one hopes, pays homage to the process and rewards the adventurer. This is simultaneously a “classic” riesling from upstate New York while also being an evolution from the New York State rieslings of yore. In 2020 expect almost a more prototypical riesling core with hints of lemon verbena, petrol, and white peach.
¡Claro que sí!
off-dry sparkling
Fermentation is the magical process that separates a winemaker from a farmer. Both roles are crucial and demand respect. A farmer produces the raw ingredients that can only be degraded in quality from the moment they are separated from their mother Earth. A winemaker must steward these grapes into a new iteration while taking great care at every stage to maintain the quality and preserve the dignity of the raw material. When a secondary fermentation is introduced, the complexities of a winemaker’s role go up exponentially. The reward, if it pays off, is worth the risk. In this case, the role of the dice has yielded very fine results indeed. Yahtzee. Bingo. Jackpot. We are quite pleased with the double dose of magic found in these bottles. Expect a slightly off-dry (for the better, trust us), vaguely coffee-inflected honeyed riesling overtone on top of a very pleasant bubble and well-rounded acid backbone holding it all together. LIMITED 1 PER 3-BTL ALLOTMENT.
‘Chette Baker
skin-contact gewurztraminer
I mean, look. It’s not what you don’t want. I’ve always had a soft spot for skin contact, highly aromatic wines. Sauvignon blanc? It’s only better on skins. Pinot gris? Gimme the skins. Gewurz? You better believe I want the skins. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the skins. Our skin contact gewurz' was hand-harvested by Cesar, Caleb, and our friend Gilber. It comes from organic vineyards on Seneca Lake’s east side. It spent 1 week on the skins before racking off to age further. The classic gewurz' notes of lychee and rose are there, but there’s a special category of magic that happens when this juice gets to extract more from the skins than it’s used to. While orange wine may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we are very proud of our first foray into maceration territory. Darjeeling (black) tea, apricot jam, with a subtle kiss of vanilla make this luscious elixir all the more luxe. LIMITED 1 PER 3-BTL ALLOTMENT
