• The 10/20/30 Pledge:

A commitment to racial equity, accessibility, diversity and inclusion (READI) for the performing arts.

  • Introduction

As a membership organization that serves all performing arts professionals, APAP recognizes the urgency of this moment to support People of Color as performing artists and arts professionals who are a valuable part of this country and world and to repair the longstanding injustice that has dominated their experience in cultures worldwide.

There is also urgency among the membership, with the field asking for tools, resources and community, as both organizations and individuals dedicate and recommit themselves to working towards racial equity, accessibility, diversity and inclusion. We invite you to join us in a fieldwide response. A systemic problem requires individual and community action.

APAP offers its 10/20/30 Pledge for APAP membership and the field-at-large to take at this moment.

    • The 10/20/30 PLEDGE is designed to unfold over 10 years (though we acknowledge that the goals may be in closer reach for many and will take less time), allowing for the necessary process of change, training, and policy evolutions that often require complex institutional considerations, field engagement and support, difficult decisions, vision and shared courage.

    • This pledge carries both an individual and an organizational focus. While initially written for presenters, its principles and ideas can certainly be applied to managers, agents, producers, artists and other cultural workers.

    • We acknowledge that our collective journey towards racial equity, diversity and inclusion is a long-term one. Our focus and actions will need to shift and change as we all grow and continue down this path.

    • We acknowledge and celebrate those who are already leading the field in racial equity, diversity, and inclusion work and for whom these are intrinsic bedrock values. We invite you to sign the pledge as partners in this effort.

    • We see the 10/20/30 PLEDGE as a start and a defined, first step towards actualizing the changes towards equity in the field that remains elusive and ill-defined.

We invite you to sign THE 10/20/30 pledge as partners in this work.

Please proceed to take the organizational and/or individual pledge.

  • ORGANIZATIONAL PLEDGE:

As a leader committed to racial equity and gender justice, my organization pledges to:

    • A 10-year commitment to empower, represent and engage the work of artists and organizations within our work and/or organization who identify as and whose primary focus is from Black, Native/Indigenous, People of Color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons. This includes a commitment to hire, develop, and provide opportunities for Black, Native/Indigenous, People of Color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons in leadership and staffing positions of our organization, incorporating local and regional demographics to inform these decisions.

    • 20% percent of our programming or artist rosters allocated exclusively towards the mission, performance, presentation, commissioning, and administration of the work by artists and organizations who identify as and whose primary focus is from Black, Native/Indigenous, People of Color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons.

    • 30% percent of our annual budget for programming---for the presentation, commissioning, creation, producing or educating about work; for leadership and personnel---for the salaries and professional development costs in training and hiring for leadership, management, artistic, production, and staff positions of our organization; and for vendors---to focus exclusively on those owned or led  by Black, Native/Indigenous, People of Color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons and include local and regional demographics to inform these decisions.

    • We commit to providing current data in these areas to track the current state and progress of our efforts as part of a fieldwide benchmarking effort and to issue an annual report on status, reflection, and discovery based on the work of this Pledge.

***For the programming and budget commitments, those who fall into more than one category will count toward fulfilling percentages in both categories. For example, if you commission a woman who identifies as Black and part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, she would count toward the percentages in both programming and budget.

  • INDIVIDUAL PLEDGE

As a leader committed to racial equity and gender justice:

I pledge to eliminate barriers to leadership for Black, Native/Indigenous, People of Color, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons in performing arts organizations and in our field; to steward their work responsibly and ethically and to support and advocate for cultural workers who identify as such.

I pledge to address the uncomfortable history of racism and the settler-colonial foundations of the institutional practices in our performing arts field and understand anti-racism and decolonizing work are a long-term commitment.

I commit to accountable and equitable processes to better serve Black, Native/Indigenous, and People of Color communities, as well as women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ persons and to advance the following 10/20/30 goals for the performing arts field using my position, influence and networks.
