  • The YUGSA recognizes that many of our members continue to deal with financial precarity which causes undue social and mental burdens as they work to complete their graduate degrees. Many members continue to face reduced hours, lost jobs, and a sudden need for money to buy even basic necessities. To address this, YUGSA has set up a Hardship Fund to help affected members who have experienced a recent, unexpected hardship in order to help them achieve their academic, social and professional goals. Some of the eligible examples of applying for the Hardship Fund are but not excluded to: facing reduced working hours, lost jobs, and a sudden need for money to buy basic necessities.

  • 1. The eligible candidates for this bursary must be YUGSA members (both full/part-time registered graduate students). Proof of registration will be required.

    • Schulich School of Business M.A. students are not eligible for YUGSA Funds and Service as per their Associate Agreement (see YUGSA By-Laws, Appendix A, Article C.viii., p.64)
    • Osgoode Law Hall students eligible to apply for funds/bursaries include:
      • Osgoode Professional Development (OPD) Program Student
      • LLM Research Stream Students
      • PhD Students

    2. A short statement of financial need (200 - 500 words) will be required to adjudicate the funds.

    3. The maximum amount that each eligible applicant can receive is $300.00. The final amount awarded to each applicant is subject to the total number of applicants and the total amount of funding available.

    4. Application Deadline: There is no specific deadline for this fund. The application is open based on the availability of the budget. 

    5. In accordance with the YUGSA Constitution and in the interests of our members' privacy, the Association will destroy in a secure manner all collected application forms and photocopies once they are no longer needed for auditing purposes.

    6. The distribution of this fund will be decided by the YUGSA Executive Committee and administered through the Finance Committee. The decision about the eligibility of candidates is made by the Finance Committee.

    8. First-time applicants will be given preference.
