7. Will your study involve the capture, handling, harassment of, use of target or nontarget species? Will your study involve any invasive procedures or the use of any other technique or product that may compromise the welfare of target or nontarget species? Some examples of invasive procedures include capturing in nets, biopsy sampling, permanent marking, nest/den disruption, collecting blood/tissue samples, surgery, and use of monitoring devices (e.g., microchips, radio-collars, harnesses). Examples of techniques or products that may compromise the welfare of a target or nontarget species include animal scents (if not synthetically produced), use of live bait, and nest/den site manipulation that jeopardizes survival of occupants. Any wildlife captured for the proposed study must be released as soon as possible at their capture location.*

AWI will only fund studies that involve non- or minimally invasive procedures and those that do not unnecessariy compromise the welfare of target and nontarget animals. If your proposal involves minimally invasive procedures or other elements that may compromise the welfare of animals or if you are uncertain if your procedure is minimally invasive or will compromise welfare, describe the procedures, include a justification for their use, and summarize the steps you will take to minimize harm to the animals.

If your study includes the use of captive wildlife and/or companion animals e.g., scent detection dogs, guard animals, etc., describe the source of the animals; the care (including housing details and veterinary care) to be provided to the animals before, during, and after the study ends; and the disposition of the animals at the conclusion of the study.*

Companion animals must come from reputable sources. They must be given appropriate food, housing, veterinary care, and companionship during the study and be provided with long-term care at the conclusion of the study. If captive wildlife are used in the study, include information about their care and disposition at the conclusion of the study.
9. Provide an itemized budget (including specific details of how award funds will be used if part of a larger budget).*
Proposals without an itemized budget will be rejected. Funds cannot be used for indirect costs. Salaries, stipends, and travel costs to present research findings at scientific conferences may be included. Purchase of animals is only allowed if the requirements of instruction 6 are fulfilled.
