  • About Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. | Bexar Area Alumnae 

    Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the largest public service organization comprised of predominately college educated African-American women, is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to conduct public service through established programs in order to empower local communities throughout the world.  The organization was founded, January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University located in Washington, D.C.

    The Bexar Area Alumnae Chapter was chartered on April 12, 2014 in Schertz, Texas. The Chapter provides services to citizens residing in Bexar County: (excluding San Antonio) Cibolo, Converse, Garden Ridge, Selma, Schertz, Live Oak, Universal City, Kirby, Windcrest, Helotes, Comal County and Guadalupe County.  

    Chapter activities are based upon the organization’s national Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:  Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness & Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness & Involvement/Social Action.

    NOTE:  Relatives of members of the Bexar Area Alumnae Chapter are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.  

  • Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • The $1,000 Delta Scholarship will be awarded to high school graduating senior applicants who:

    • Exemplify academic potential to successfully matriculate at a post-secondary institution of higher learning
    • Demonstrate leadership skills in the classroom and community
    • Provide an official high school transcript verifying a grade point average of 2.5 or above (based on a 4.0 scale) or 1.5 or above (based upon a 3.0 scale) or 75 average or above (based upon 90-100 scale)
    • Provide proof of enrollment at an accredited college, university, or post-secondary institution of higher learning during the 2022-2023 academic term, before receipt of scholarship funds
    • Reside in the service area: Bexar (excluding San Antonio), Comal or Guadalupe Counties (see above for more details)


    BASIS OF AWARD:  All nominees will be rated in the following areas  Academics, Leadership, Extra-Curricular Activities and Community/Faith-Based/Volunteer Services.

     

    In addition, applicants must also submit the following documents: 

    • Completed application (including Essay)
    • A minimum of two sealed letters of recommendation (completed by a Teacher, Counselor, Community Service Supervisor, Faith-Based Service Supervisor, Employer, or adult who has personal knowledge about your skills, character or achievements)
    • Official transcript (which includes first semester grades of the senior year and make sure you list all present and past school activities, faith-based  service and volunteer/work experience)
    • Submit a Photo (3X5 Headshot)

    DELTA SCHOLARSHIP: DREF - A PROJECT OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.  All documents submitted become property of Bexar Area Alumnae Chapter.  Relatives of members of the Bexar Area Alumnae Chapter are NOT eligible to apply for this Scholarship.  Decisions of the Scholarship/Selection committee are final and are not subject to appeal.

  • Requirements for Completing Your Essay

    Student essays are an essential part of the application process for awarding scholarships. To assist your efforts, please adhere to the guidelines listed below.

    Essay responses should be completed:

    A.    Using Microsoft Word, doubled-spaced, with a 12pt. font

    B.     Limited to 750-1,000 words

    C.     Name should be typed on each page

    D.    Select only one of the essay prompts as your topic

    1. In your opinion who is the most influential African American in the 21st Century and why?
    2. What do you think is the most pressing issue in today’s society and why?
    3. How have you contributed to your community?
    4. If you had the authority to change your community in a positive way, what specific changes would you make and why?
