Summer Reading Programs were originally designed by public libraries to help elementary-aged students avoid summer learning loss by encouraging them to read. Our Summer Reading Programs have grown to include programs and prizes for all ages-tweens, teens, and adults making it a true community-wide program. In our economically-challenged area, the Library System has become more important than ever and is busier than ever. We touch the lives of many and strive to do even more.
Starting in June 2020, our children's programming team pivoted and innovated with our Story Time in the Park events. We held story times at 7 outdoor locations throughout the county to ensure safe, socially distanced, family friendly programs. During our 13 programs, we had over 800 people in attendance, and because of support from community partners and sponsors, every child in attendance went home with a free book and pre-packaged craft project. In support of local small businesses, the majority of our participation prizes were purchased from local ice cream shops, coffee shops, and restaurants. We also encouraged safe outdoor activities by giving Maryland State Park Passports as grand prizes.
