Luther Latin School (LLS) exists to support parents in their vocation as caregivers and instructors in the historic classical Christian tradition. Our mission is to deliver to them wisdom, courage, and growth to press on in their Faith and learning. To know how to think, and be honorable in the vocations God has for them. We believe a classical education is best for ANY child as it strengthens mind, body and soul.
We are a creedal classical Chrisitan program. Scripture says Faith comes by hearing, therefore, we encourage families to commit to at least one chapel together (we support each other in receiving Scripture), as well as regularly attend their own weekly church sevices.
We meet weekly at Hope Lutheran Church in Spokane Valley, WA on Tuesdays and Shepherd of the Hills in Rathdrum, ID on Wednesdays (8:30AM-3:30PM) beginning in Sept. ending in May.
COMMITMENT: Families are in service to one another, and commit to arriving on time, prepared to actively participate for the entire scheduled year (34 weeks). Absence happens; therefore, substitutes (person already part of the program) should be arranged by lead for their absences. We allow no more than 5 absences or 5 tardies per year.
A Parent/Guardian should plan to remain on campus at least one (1) entire Co-op day/week. Each family (attending Hope Lutheran in Spokane Valley) is asked to contribute a non-refundable $300/year/family to attend the 2024-5 academic year. There are a variety of opportunities to volunteer including: leading & assisting class (class leads folllow curriculum manual guide, watch teacher training videos, and may also take classes), prepping class materials, arranging field trips/parties, recess monitoring and/or cleaning.
Parents of middle/high school level children, and NOT remaining onsite, contribute a non-refundable $300/yr/family (Hope Lutheran only) for the church. Additionally, we require for 10 hours/ school year/family volunteering and $50/class/mo/child or $325/child/month (all access), given before the next month.
The purchase of a uniform polo for students for weekly and event wear is highly encouraged.
Parents agree to ensure their child(ren) are obedient, respectful, modest, properly use internet and facility, do not curse/swear, and complete their work on-time, to their best ability. This loves our neighbor, and aides in efficient use of our short time together.
ACADEMICS: Each week the Director and class leads complete a suggested lesson plan via Google doc available to parents. Assigned work needs to be completed prior to the next class.
Families are required to purchase thier own copies of text/workbooks for the classes their child(ren) attend. If ordered in bulk by spring of the previous year, we offer free shipping for Memoria Press orders.
Being classical means our students are required to study core classical subjects. On average grade-school children need their parents to work with them at home, for 4-5 hours/day or 1hr/day/subject. This is the primary commitment to your child, and will be very fruitful, however, not all families are prepared for this kind of dedication. We study ancient language LATIN/GREEK, CLASSICAL & CHRISTIAN studies as well as LITERATURE & POETRY. In order to be able to accomplish this we offer elementary classes in various subjects enabling students to acquire the needed skill set to study these areas.
BENEFITS: We will accomplish a necessary body of information in the year. We will guide you to be the best instructor you can be for your child. We plan several field trips, parties and academic performace day each year in order that children can expand thier ability/experience. Each family will receive a school year planner to notate their weekly work/events. Veteran classical instructors (most with college degrees) lead core classes, they are also readily availble for questions and guidance. New families are offered the ability to help assist class, and/or lead less instrucive areas.
Over the course of the year(s) you will see your child(ren) desire to obtain an increased body of knowledge, seek to expand their learning base, endeavor to learn difficult curriula, and most importantly we surrounded by those who encourage their Faith. We strive to encourage our children in excellence, guide in manners, and a chance to learn how to love and serve one another. This is obtained by providing a bit of tension (expectation) in the level of their daily work, we remind ourselves that "We can do hard things" and amazingly we do. Dedicated families will see their child enjoy latin (parents also get a second education in the areas we were not taught). Children will memorize Scripture, poetry, speeches and are taught Truth, Goodness and Beauty are NOT relative.
The support of the group is imperative in order to accomplish this. We are here in order to not only provide time-tested curricula, but also comfort and support as parents take on this important work. Every 6-8 weeks we try to have a parent planning meeting, during one of these meetings we discuss our day together and home. We may also present a summary of a classically related class, book, video/podcast etc, that encourages parents or improves our program. In addition, class leads are offered mentorship in class management.
AGREEMENT/WAIVER: Parents agree to hold harmless; other parents while onsite at either Hope Lutheran Church or Shepherd of the Hills and any volunteers/personnel therein for anything including, but not limited to injury, sickness, and/or academic performance.
Parents agree they will attend an interview/tour, submit a background check (completed within the last 2 years), read and sign the Parent Handbook, make every effort to work together in a loving manner according to Scripture, attend meetings to organize, plan and review teaching materials and methods together.
