MCPS Board of Education Members, I’m writing to you as a {student, community member, parent, staff member} urging you to remove School Resource Officers (SRO’s) from MCPS and make our schools safe for all students. Students have spoken. Across Montgomery County, MD students have presented public testimony to the County Council, organized protests, circulated online petitions, reflected on personal traumas and those of their peers, and shown overwhelming support for removing police from schools. The Montgomery County Defund Policing and Invest in Communities Coalition, a coalition consisting of over 25+ organizations here in Montgomery County, supports police removal from public schools. We urge the Montgomery County Board of Education to listen to both Moco residents and the main body that their policies impact -- their students. There has been overwhelming student support for the removal of SROs. It is time that the Board of Education follows suit. The national, state, and local data show that alternatives to policing, such as social workers, restorative justice, and conflict resolution services, are more effective in supporting students than School Resource Officers. The data presented in the Racial Equity Impact Statement prepared by the Office of Legislative Oversight shows the harmful and inequitable impact of Montgomery County's SRO program on Black, Latinx, and disabled students and confirms that other student supports are more effective in creating a safer school environment. Prioritizing data is all the more important in light of the report from the Board of Education's SRO Working Group, which was the result of a deeply flawed process. Please read this letter from students and parents whose voices were silenced in the creation of the report - https://twitter.com/moco4change/status/1349062423282651138. The data -- and our county's values -- are clear. In order to improve racial equity, we must invest in our students, not arrest them. We cannot call ourselves an anti-racist school system and participate in anti-racist audits while funding an inherently racist program. Please vote to remove School Resource Officers from MCPS and make our schools safe for all students. Sincerely,
Your email will be sent to all voting MCPS Board of Education Members
