Are there any additional examinations required in this state?	An applicant who fails an examination given under this section may not retake the examination for a period of six months from the date of the examination that the applicant failed. The Board shall revoke a license for supervised practice if the person fails the examination required two or more times. Also, there is a state written examination that includes questions covering: (1) state statutes and regulations applying to the practice of Marital and Family Therapy; and (2) the code of ethics adopted by the Board (it is open book).

Supervision Requirements (ALL)

Licensed for at least 2 years as a mental health professional (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, LEP* or psychologist or psychiatrist) in CA who has actively practiced as a therapist or supervisor for the past 2 years (shown in resume) *LEPs may only supervise the provision of educationally related mental health services consistent with the LEP scope of practice described in BPC section 4989.14, up to a maximum of 1,200 hours.
For at least 2 of the past 5 years immediately preceding supervision, the supervisor has practiced psychotherapy or provided direct clinical supervision of psychotherapy performed by marriage and family therapist trainees, associate marriage and family therapists (AMFTs), associate professional clinical counselors (APCCs), or associate clinical social workers (ASWs). Supervision of psychotherapy performed by social work interns (students) or professional clinical counselor trainees is also acceptable if the supervision is substantially equivalent to the supervision required for board registrants;
If LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or LEP, must initially complete 15 hours within 60 days of commencement of supervision (if new supervisor starting after 01/01/22) and 6 hours of supervisor training every 2 year license renewal period. Board-qualified supervisors approved before 2022 need 6 CE hours of supervision training or coursework. Supervisor training is not required for psychologists or psychiatrists.

Students must complete the BBS Supervision Agreement (BBS Supervision Agreement) within 60 days of beginning supervision. Students are responsible for obtaining the Agreement from the BBS website and signing it with their supervisor. Students are responsible for filing this agreement in their personal records.

When a registrant who holds a current or delinquent registration takes the examination and does not pass during his or her one-year renewal cycle, the registrant shall complete a 12-hour course on California law and ethics.
