According to the Education Commission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales, Catholic schools receiving more applications from Catholic families than available places are to prioritise Catholic families declared as "practising" by their Catholic priest.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church declares that "a person is a practising Catholic if they observe the Church’s precept of attending Mass on Sundays and holidays of obligation." (CCC 2041-2042). The Education Commission note (in their Guidance for Clergy document) that: "Priests cannot be expected to be able to recall whether or not each parishioner has attended Mass on every single Sunday or holiday of obligation, nor can they always be expected to know whether or not, on a particular occasion, a person is lawfully excused from doing so."
In light of this - and to ensure fairness in the provision of school places - we operate a system of random Scan-In Sundays on which attendance is objectively verified and from which Catholic practice is determined.
Method of Confirming Catholic Practice
After the successful completion of the following form parents will receive a unique QR code for their family.
On random Sundays throughout the year - Scan-in Sundays - parents will be asked to produce their QR code at Mass which will be scanned to register attendance.
Frequency of attendance will be judged with reference to this data alone.
In order to obtain a QR code and have your Priest's Reference form(s) completed the following form must be completed in full.
If your family is worshipping elsewhere on a Scan-In Sunday
you must inform the Parish Office via telephone or email
within one week
of the reason for your absence. If there is more than one unexplained absence a family will not qualify as practising.
If your family's attendance is limited due to medical or personal reasons
you are obliged to inform us as soon as possible.
If you have only been coming to Mass in our parish for under 2 years
you will need to obtain a signed letter / Certificate of Catholic Practice from your previous Parish Priest. If you do not have this with you currently please obtain it before completing this form as it is necessary in order to complete this form.
Your unique QR code will be sent via email which will make it easy to retrieve on your smartphone.
It is advisable to take a screenshot of the code and store it as a favourite photo on your phone so it can be easily located.
*** Please only complete this form if you require a reference or references for September 2022 entry! ***
