2027 Show Season

** PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION BEFORE PROCEEDING **

The Players Theatre Inc. is inviting submissions for its 2027 show season.

PLEASE NOTE: SUBMISSIONS WILL BE TAKEN IN TWO STAGES AS FOLLOWS:

1. Unpublished works from 1st December 2025
2. Published works from 28th February 2026

An unpublished work is defined as one that has not yet been commercially produced, eg. self-written and/or original works.

Original works will be treated as confidential and will NOT be shared outside the organisation. The Players Theatre Inc. recognise that original works are copyrighted to the original writer/owner.

SHOW SELECTION PROCESS and TIME FRAMES

DECEMBER 2024

• Sunday, 1st - Submissions OPEN (unpublished works)

JANUARY 2025

• Friday, 31st - Submissions CLOSE (unpublished works)

FEBRUARY 2025

• Thursday, 13th (Committee Meeting) - Committee categorise unpublished works as follows:
  • Suitable to go straight through to committee selection process
  • Needs to be workshopped (max of 2 in this category)
  • Not for The Players Theatre
• Following Committee Meeting - Authors/submitters notified and invited to be part of workshop process
• Then - 1st workshop
• Friday, 28th - Submissions OPEN (published works)

MARCH 2025

• Unpublished workshops continue
• Sunday, 30th - Call for expressions of interest to be part of SST (Show Selection Team)

APRIL 2025

• Thursday, 10th (Committee Meeting) - Committee sign off on unpublished/workshopped shows to move to selection process
  • Committee sign off on members of the SST
  • SST Start receiving submissions in preparation for shortlisting meeting
• Wednesday, 30th - All submissions CLOSE

MAY 2025

• Wednesday, 7th - SST meet to shortlist submissions to 5 plays and 5 musicals
• Thursday, 8th (Committee Meeting) - Committee review shortlist and start building show program

JUNE 2025

• Thursday, 12th (Committee Meeting) - Committee set and ratify show program for 2026 pending rights
• Within a week of meeting - Secretary notifies successful submitters of selected shows, pending rights, and unsuccessful submitters

2026 Show Season

SHOW SELECTION CRITERIA

The Players Theatre Inc. Show Selection Team, and Management Committee will use the following criteria to select shows for the main show season each year.

NOTES:

• The criteria is viewed with the entire season in mind.
• A call for show submissions will be made from members and the general public
  • Submitting a show is not a guarantee a show will be selected
  • Shortlisted show submitters may be expected to present their vision of the show to the committee in person
  • The committee reserve the right to select its “own” show/s and call for, and select a Director
  • Shows are selected pending the ability to obtain permissions/rights
• The management committee have overarching control of the selection process and will select shows at its own discretion
• Each criterion is listed in order of importance
• This is a living document, ie. content can be reviewed and changed periodically

CRITERIA:

1. Quality
2. Profitability
3. Variety
   • In a year where the One Act Play Festival is hosted, up to 4 shows will be selected plus One Act Plays
   • In a year where the One Act Play Festival is NOT hosted, up to 4 shows will be selected plus an end of year Showtime OR a Pantomime during the holidays
   • Shows are selected in order of meeting the criteria as follows, not the order in which they will run in the season:
     1. Selected shows 1 and 2 - Major productions, based on quality and profitability
     2. Selected show 3 - Variety, profitability, and ability to cast
     3. Selected show 4 - Risk based on:
        • Unpublished
        • Training - directors, technical, actors, etc.
        • Promoting youth (in audience and/or cast/crew)
        • Step out of comfort zone of The Players Theatre
        • Semi-experimental
          • limited by theatrical content and suitability
     4. One Act Play/s (in festival hosting years)
     5. Showtime or Pantomime (in non-festival hosting years)
   • The season run order is determined at another time
   • Attempts will be made to run the season with alternate types of shows, ie. Musical then play or vice versa
4. Theatrical (engaging the audience)
   • Appropriate content (keep The Players Theatre in good stead with community)
5. Ability to direct - complexity
   • Ability to stage - physical constraints (sets, props, costumes, technical, etc.)
6. Ability to cast
   • Retain cast for future shows
7. Membership
   • Retain existing member base
   • Expand patron/member base
8. Ability to promote
9. Has the show been “overdone”?
   • By The Players Theatre
   • By other companies (recently produced)
   • Is it a new concept/idea/format on a previous production?
10. New content
    • Education connection, eg. on HSC list
    • Youth content

• Acceptance and agreement to all Codes of Conduct

NB: If your show is selected, The Players Theatre Inc. will be the producer of that show. You will be required to agree to the Director’s Roles and Responsibilities, and all Codes of Conduct. MEMBERSHIP

You are NOT required to be a financial member of The Players Theatre Inc. to submit this form, however you WILL be required to become a financial member to participate in any production at The Players Theatre. Please visit playerstheatre.org.au for information on becoming a member.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN

All participants in a production at The Players Theatre are required to possess and provide their valid Working With Children check information. WWCC can be obtained for free as a volunteer from Service NSW.

CONFIRMATION

Once you submit this form, you will receive an email confirmation with details of your submission. Use that email as notification that your submission has been recieved unless we contact you otherwise. The information you submit in this form is private and will only be available to the Players Theatre Management Committee and its delegates.
