Over the past 50 years, advances in the science and application of Nutrition and Optoelectronics have impacted very many aspects of human life. Looking ahead, what might the next 50 years of scientific discovery and endeavour reveal? What future possibilities and major challenges could be answered by enquiry-led research in these fields?
As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, we are launching The Rank Prize Funds Research Visionary Awards to encourage Early Career Researchers to explore these questions.
Six competitively selected ECRs in the fields of Nutrition and Optoelectronics will be invited to give their personal perspectives on the next 50 years of scientific endeavour at a half-day foresight event in London in January 2022 hosted by Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE FRS.
Throughout 2021, the six award-winners will benefit from a tailored programme of 1-to-1 media training and workshops on foresighting techniques, narrative formation, and content development (summer 2021). They will be supported with trend research, presentation design and artwork, as well as speaker training for high-impact presentations (autumn 2021). They will also produce a professionally filmed video featuring their scientific work and personal perspective on the future (winter 2021).
The Competition is open to Early Career Researchers at UK universities and research institutes in the fields of Nutrition or Optoelectronics, including Visual Science.
Early Career Researchers must be within seven years of the award of their PhD (allowances will be made for career breaks). PhD students are not eligible to apply.
As part of the selection process, applicants should be prepared to make a 2-minute video outlining their personal perspectives on the future of their field in either Nutrition or Optoelectronics. (Guidance will be provided)
