The sailing course you are about to begin is an exciting and demanding challenge. The program's staff will do everything possible to see that you stay safe and have lots of fun. At this time, we assume the need for Covid-19 compliance and have incorporated measures to accommodate Covid-19 rules. You need to be aware of what will be involved in the course and be willing to study and practice to achieve success.
For safety purposes you will be required to bring and wear a personal flotation device (PFD) at all times when on club property unless otherwise directed by an instructor. It must be a U.S. Coast Guard approved type III and be the proper size for your weight and build. Be sure to put your name on your PFD with waterproof ink. Wearing a mask or neck gaiter is at the discretion of your parent or guardian.
Learn to sail classes require each student complete a capsize recovery exercise on the first day of your class. You will swim a short distance with your PFD, tread water for a short time and swim from the dock to a capsized dinghy. You will right the dinghy and climb aboard, capsize the boat, swim to the dock and climb out of the water via a swim ladder. This exercise will prepare you if you should capsize while learning to sail. You will have a chance to hose off and change clothes following the capsize drill.
Double Handed Sailing classes are designed to build your skills and enjoyment of sailing and to work as a team onboard. We expect that you are already confident in your ability to sail. The Adventure Sail class will offer you the opportunity to sail in more open waters of Liberty Bay and beyond, such as Port Madison, Manzanita Bay, Illahee and Brownsville. Many sailors find that time spent exploring waterways and visiting remote islands and ports is the best part of sailing. Double Handed and Adventure Sail require pre-approval by the Registrar.
You may get wet any day of the program so bring a change of clothes each day. We require that you wear appropriate footwear at all times. Water socks or keen type shoes work well. No open toe footwear or flip flops.
Bring each day: PFD, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, change of clothes, towel and sack lunch with beverage.
Please read, understand and sign the following statement of understanding. Have your parent or guardian witness your signature.
