• Celebrate LGBTQ-inclusive literature

    This June, Hope in a Box and Channel Kindness, a program of Born This Way Foundation, are teaming up to celebrate LGBTQ-inclusive literature. We’re asking K-12 students to share videos or essays describing how LGBTQ-inclusive books have inspired them. Selected submissions will be featured on ChannelKindness.org and Born This Way Foundation and Hope in a Box social channels. Entrants will have the chance to win a $500 cash prize and one of five $100 gift cards to Barnes & Noble.

  • SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

    Deadline: Friday, May 14, 11:59pm ET

    Prompts (please choose one)

    1. How has reading LGBTQ-inclusive stories impacted you personally? Please reference specific authors or titles that you have found meaningful.
    2. Address the author of one of your favorite LGBTQ-inclusive books: Explain why a particular character, scene, or line inspired you. Use any medium you're most comfortable with (e.g., letter, poetry, song). For written submissions, include in-text citations in MLA format.
    3. Write or speak to your younger self. What piece of literature, music, or art would you most want to share with yourself, and why?

    • Use headphones with a mic to ensure good sound quality

    Essays should be 300-500 words long. Please...

    • Check your spelling and grammar
    • Include in-text citations in MLA format (if needed)
    • NOTE: If you are chosen as a finalist, we will ask if you prefer to be published anonymously.
