This award recognizes a private or family foundation (non-corporate) with a strong record of exceptional generosity that, through direct financial support, has demonstrated exceptional or innovative civic and charitable responsibility, and has encouraged and motivated others in the foundation community to take leadership roles in philanthropy and community involvement. NOTE: Corporate foundations are not eligible for this award. See Outstanding Large Corporation/Outstanding Small Business categories for corporate foundation nomination instructions.
For the purposes of this application, family and private foundation are defined as follows:
A family foundation is one whose funds are derived from members of a single family. At least one family member must continue to serve as an officer or board member of the foundation (e.g. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).
A private foundation is a non-operating private foundation with 501(c)(3) status (sometimes called an independent foundation) established to fund charitable activities. The foundation serves as a philanthropic partner in the form of grantmaking or other charitable distributions.
