Unsolved problems and possible paths on the road to human level intelligence

Both Cognitive neuroscience and AI are on the quest to understand human intelligence. Both fields approach the goal differently, Cognitive neuroscience by studying intelligence and AI by building it. In this short study, we want to map current progress in AI on the human cognitive functions to identify major challenges and promising research directions on the path towards human level intelligence. Specifically, we want to collect community assessment of:

1. current abilities of AI systems in the space of human cognitive functions;

2. how current research directions in the AI domain might contribute towards implementing particular human cognitive functions.

As a result we expect to reconstruct with the help of a community a landscape of a problem space for human level AI. We hope that this landscape could help to clarify the current state of AI and outline possible paths towards more capable AI systems. Report summarizing major findings of the study will be published online. 

There is no commonly accepted list of human cognitive functions. We have tried to include functions the most frequently considered in the literature. So, some functions might be superficial and others missing from your point of view. Please, just skip functions you consider irrelevant and add your options at the end of the list. For every function specify on the scale from 0 to 9 your estimate to what extent this function can be reproduced by current AI systems.

Right now, the field of AI is rapidly evolving with new directions emerging every year. We compiled a list of active research areas after analyses of topics presented on major AI conferences (NeurIPS, AAAI, ICLR, CVPR, IJCAI etc…). Please, check which current research directions in the AI deep learning domain might contribute towards implementing particular human cognitive functions.
